I worked in Athens for several years 25 years ago and had a lot of Greek friends some of whom did not speak very good English so I learnt to speak reasonably well. English wasn't so widely spoken then so I could hold a conversation at the time and understand a good deal too but over the years I have lost most of it due to lack of practice.

Bits come back when I go back to Greece but more and more Greeks speak English well now so don't use it as much.

Graham - Yes! You're absolutely right - somehow I seem to have missed all the posts on that page! I think sometimes the computer returns to the most recent page when I go back to a topic, but usually I check. Also, some of the posts on that page contained Greek written in Latin letters, which always freaks me out - I find it hard to understand what's being said. Maybe Jackie felt that too and was politely introducing a more practical question!
