Nutshell in February

Hi,

I have gotten free flights to Oslo in the middle of February next year. I am ariving late on Thursday night and flying out late on Sunday evening so I have a good 3 days. I was looking to organise a trip to Flam and other sites if possible. I have been to Oslo before so I dont want to spend any time there. Can anyone help me with an itinerary that would not be too expensive and could be done in the 2 or 3 days. I have seen the nutshell route taking in the Oslo to Myrdal to Flam trains but was wondering where would be the best place to stay if I was going to spend a night somewhere. I am not sure if I will have time for Bergen? I don't mind the cold and snow but I am conscious of the short days with not much time in the day to see the sites.

By mid February you have about 9 hours of daylight in south Norway - that is not too bad considering.

If you do not want to spend time in Oslo, you could maybe take a flight straight to Bergen on the day of arrival. Fjords are very much out of season in winter, but you could do the Norway in a Nutshell from Bergen and get the highlights within the daylight hours. It is possible to stay overnight in Flåm, but imo not worth it in winter. From Bergen there is also the possibility to do a round trip by boat to Rosendal on the Hardangerfjord (week-days only).

Depending on your flight departure, you might even be able to do Norway in a Nutshell on your way back to Oslo.

Other stopovers could be ski resorts like Finse and Geilo on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau.

Places to stay on the NiN, consider:

Finse: http://www.finse1222.no/en/home.html

Flåm: http://fretheimhotel.no/en/

Vatnahalsen: http://vatnahalsen.no/en

Stålheim: http://english.stalheim.dnn.gasta.no

You'll have to check the timetables, but perhaps taking the train to Voss then bus to Stålheim on day 1, then continue on bus next day to Gudvangen, ferry to Flåm, Flåm train and train to Oslo. Alternative is to stay at Vatnahalsen on day 1 near Myrdal.

Note that night train Bergen - Oslo does not run on Saturdays. Note also that mid to end Feb is half term holiday season and trains could get booked up - or at least all cheap tickets taken. To save book longer rain journeys in advance with minipris http://www.nsb.no/?lang=en_US
