Do I need a rental car for Tossa de Mar and Costa Brava?

Appreciate all advice! I'd read that to appreciate the coast, it's best to rent car and explore. So that was the plan--Get car in Barcelona, stay in Tossa 4 nights, explore a bit, drive to Girona airport and drop it off upon departure. But now the dilemma: We found lodging in Tossa for August but it doesnt have parking. I've now read that parking (free and pay) in Tossa can be especially difficult in August and I've also read some nightmare posts about the car rental companies and the various scams. Wondering if we should reconsider plan--and if the car is really necessary. We're 2 adults/2 kids (11 and 12) and assumed that we'd want to see St. Felui, Begur, Llafranc, Tamarui, etc....but now I wonder (1) is there enough to do in Tossa that kids will be content to just hang there (if we simply bus in from Barcelona and taxi to airport), or (2) perhaps we could get some scooters for an excursion or two (double seating??), or (3) take the bus one day into one of these towns, and that would be enough? Or should we just figure out the parking situation and get the car?! Lodging wasn't easy to find and the place looks lovely, so I think we should stick with it. Help! Thanks in advance!!

Elizabeth.... I'll put in some info on the car hire. There are no real scams just terms and conditions on car rental hire contracts in small print that people either miss or do not read. They are usually about fuel. Some companies give you a full tank and whatever is left is charged for..... others give you a full tank and ask for a full tank back. Ignore this and you will be charged at high airport fuel rates.

IMHO the car will give you more freedom and give you the chance to explore more. However you are hiring from El Prat and returning the car to Girona. There maybe a surcharge for this or you might be able to get a deal which includes a different return location but in August most charges will be at their highest.

Ditto Martin! :)

Hi Liz,

Furthermore:

1.) Yes, parking can be difficult in August as the whole Costa Brava is packed... but not impossible! Although you could do without a car and still be able to visit bits and pieces of the Costa Brava, it's totally advised to hire one in order not to depend on public transportation which, while being reliable, it's scarce.

2.) Don't even think about getting into any major road with a scooter, it's too dangerous. Unless it's a tiny road -normally taking you to nowhere you'd probably want to go- the roads have lots of traffic most of the time, besides many roads are curvy, some hilly... so NO please, scooter for riding within a town (and maybe suburbs) is ok, but not to get on the road. This advice comes from a bike rider! ;)

3.) Some ideas on things to visit in the area:

TOSSA DE MAR, of course!: infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/15/tossa-de-mar/

THE 'COUNTY': http://www.baixemporda-costabrava.org/en/

GIRONA : http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/11/30/ben/

FIGUERES : infocatalonia.eu/w/… -note this and Girona are very close

BESALÚ: www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/11/30/besalu/

ROSES: www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/15/roses/

SANT PERE DE RODES: infocatalonia.eu/w/…

and this, while NOT being a tourist attraction -in fact is a centre similar to Monkey World in the UK!- might be an interesting experience for your kids: http://www.fundacionmona.org/en/ It's about 45' drive from Tossa. But you can't just turn up, you have to make reservations in advance. This other one is also a hit with kids: http://www.cimdaligues.com/en/ and it's just about 90' drive from Tossa. Lastly, what would a vacation be without a waterpark?: http://www.waterworld.es/en/home.html That's in Lloret de Mar, about 20' away from Tossa -for this you could take a free bus in Tossa to the park.

I would imagine you have planned a visit to Barcelona, haven't you?... it'd be a sin not to! Well, these are some ideas for your visit to Barcelona: http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/category/bcn/ and http://www.barcelonaturisme.com/

Enjoy!

Parking is a nightmare in Tossa in August and off street parking, even those linked to a hotel, will be €12 per day but if you do decide to hire a car with drop off in Girona then the one most regulars use is

http://www.mariusrentacar.com/index2ang.htm

They are family owned & I have used them for 25 years.

There is loads to do in Tossa, the Town Hall site is here

http://www.infotossa.com/indexeng.php

There are good bus links along the coast, some via Lloret or Girona, and that would be my choice.

Barcelona to Tossa is either by direct coach a few times a day or train to Blanes and then bus to Lloret to Tossa.

The Top Questions has loads of advice.
