Where do the locals socialise?

Hi everyone, we are a couple in our early 50's (my wife does say I haven't hit my teens yet. Not sure what she is implying?) and we are visiting Malta for our second visit later this year in September. We visited last year but only for a day as we are on a cruise.

Anyway, we will be staying in Mellieha at the Seabank. We have holidayed in many countries and enjoy mixing with the locals. We were both wondering where the best places to socialise in the evenings are so that we can mix with them / you?

Obviously we both enjoy eating out, bars etc

There are plenty of places for you to enjoy - the bars in the ghadiera area (Zapps Stans and Last Paradise) are quite busy with local maltese and other ex pat nationals...a little further afield in the village you have the two band clubs in the square and the labour club near the hsbc in the centre. Further up the hill you have (my local) the Musicclub (elvis bar) sometimes referred to as Billys...run by Noel and Denise for sports and karaoke and elvis tribute... a little further you have Reflections and the Cross keys.... and finally you have Bucks Beer Lounge all very friendly and must be visited for a good cross section of activity. enjoy....and hope you have a good stay - the Seabank should be completely finished by then.

Most villages and towns in Malta have a band club , the headquarters of the local town band.

These clubs welcome visitors and will have a cheap tea/ coffee , beer or snacks.

Also there are politcal clubs such as Labour or Nationalist clubs . They also make you welcome.

All these clubs are good places to meet the local people .

As normal Graham is spot on with his advice, Band Clubs, PN & PL clubs are mainly the haunt of locals, as are the local football clubs and bocci clubs, so go in, enjoy, be relaxed, have a few beers and be prepared to accept hospitality and you will have a great time and will hopefully meet many of the wonderfull locals the people of Malta are the best people in the world, btw this advice applies to all Malta and Gozo not just Mellieha but one word of warning steer clear on the subject of politics especially local politics as this is very often hotly bebated quite vigorously with latin passion and a lot of shouting, stick to football and you will be fine.

We always use Billy's and Charlies Bar. Charlies is tucked away but very welcoming with its own swimming pool and sun Terrace. Sky Sports usually on. See directions on a wall very small pointing arrow.

Nice snacks in Billy's fresh cooked while watching sky sports also.

Cross Keys for nice food also Reflections

Enjoy

Band clubs for cheaper booze! In those off the beaten track, as well as local small village bars, the locals will often just look at you, but ask a question politely about their village and their feast and they will come alive, almost embarassingly so. Your visit may turn out to be longer (and boozier!) than you expected! This is Maltese hospitality

I can certainly vouch for Maltese hospitality.

The first time I ever visited Malta I popped in to a small bar in the village of Zejtun for a quick bottle of beer.

As I stood at the bar drinking another bottle appeared in front of me. I was told a group of men at a nearby table had sent it.

This was quickly followed by another then another. I went over to join these men but found not one spoke English.

Not a word was said but even more bottles of Cisk arrived until at one stage I had four empty and six full bottles on my table.

Eventually an English speaking man joined us and said all these men were interested to find out who I was.

I eventually staggered out with a spinning head and an invitation to return for another session.

What hospitality !!

Graham
