Camargue safari

I'm planning a trip to Provence in May 2014. Looking for information on jeep tours of the Camargue and any other tips for exploring this area other than horseback. Thanks

Tours depart from Arles, Airgues Mortes, Le Grau du Roi, and Stes. Maries de la Mer. Here are a few links outlining what to expect:

Have you taken any of these tours? I was hoping for some first hand info.

I have traveled this area extensively so a tour would not necessarily be of use to me. You could rent a car and drive the Camargue. This website might be of interest:

Hi, i haven't taken any of this tours but, as i have family in the "petite Camargue", i urge you to reconsider your idea because this area's ecosystem is extremly fragile and is worn out by cars.

Please inform yourself :)

Bienvenueaparis, I thought a tour with other people rather than the two of driving our own car would be better for the ecology. I assume the jeeps are not off roading.. Are you suggesting we don't visit the area at all?

No one is proposing taking a car out onto the Réserve National de Camargue and popping wheelies in the sand Bienvenueaparis. There are several reserve areas and wildlife visitation centers where people are encouraged to visit and appreciate the wildlife. Here are the websites for two:

You don't need to go far off of the beaten path to see flocks of flamingos, ride at an equestrian center, cruise along the Canal du Rhône à Sete, visit Saintes Maries de la Mer or a host of other activities. The Camargue is a big place and there's a lot to see.

Given all the passionate pleas to respect the fragile ecosystem we have decided to leave visits to the camargue to others. There are enough interesting and beautiful places in Provence that we can visit instead :-)
