Mexico and Excellence Riveria First Time travellers - Advice

Looking a bit of info on Mexico/Cancun and Excellence Riveria. We are first time travellers to Mexico and the ERC in July of this year and would love some advice the dos/donts, things to watch out for, just basically any travel advice would be great.

Would also love some advice on ERC on things that people need to bring that arent at hotel etc... just any tips at all be much appreciated.

things to bring:

Insulated mugs - otherwise the drinks melt rapidly in the ropical heat/humidity. They will gladly fill it up with your beverage of choice.

Sunscreen - LOTS of sunscreen, more then you think you'll need. Seen many an Irishman burn his first day there. Also, the El Rip You Offo gift shop charges about 8 times the price you can buy it in a real store.

With that in mind -- a spare set of sunglasses.

And a good hat.

Customs - the random ambiance of Mexico is no better demonstrated then the "red light/green light" bag inspection as you depart the customs area. Pray for a green light. When clear keep your head down and pass everyone by until you get outside to locate your hotel transfer. Don't make eye eontact with the 'helpful' folks in the walk-through area - they want to sell you something.

DO spruce up your Spanish a bit. You don't have to conjugate verbs or anything, but a rudimentary knowledge of the language is a huge help.

Tipping - have a plan going in as this is not a second nature thing for you. If you want specifics I'll be happy to help via PM.

Resort Ideas:

Definitely take advantage of room service. If you are coffee drinkers order a pot of coffee via room service. It comes fast. The back kitchen at ERC is a well oiled machine.

don't forget the back pool behind building 6, everyone misses that pool as a result it is quite quiet and private, albeit with no view of the ocean.

Oh, and the self- serve ice cream machine by Cafe Kafe.

The Hibachi table requires a reservation, but it a definite must do. It's a hoot! Also, you might get a waiter who tries to keep you in order, but you can definitely get a sushi appetizer to munch on while the guy is show-cooking your entree. You can also get any kind of drink you want, don't let him tell you otherwise. You get to meet other people at your table and it's just a lot of fun if you establish a 'party' atmosphere in your room at the beginning.

LAstly, if you do have any kind of issue PLEASE tell someone and then watcfh them work their magic. the staff truly wants to surprise you with their 'excellence' so put them to the test.

Bring lots of Hair conditioner! The saltwater is torture on your hair and the price of Suave is highway robbery in Mexico. Another thing I tossed in my suitcase was some 3m hooks to stick on the shower walls to hang everyones bathsuits on to dry. Worked Great! Have a great time! Riviera Maya is wonderful. If you do any excusions....Snorkel xtreme is well worth the money.

I don't know about the regular rooms but the conditioner in the EC rooms was great. No need to pack your own.

I can offer some advice: bring a waterproof camera case and wallet. Even if you don't intend on getting either fully submerged, this area is very damp and prone to sudden showers. Great for jungle type excursions, too! Dicapac makes some great camera cases that are waterproof.
