First time visitor to ERC and Mexico

As a first time visitor to both Mexico and ERC is there any tips or anything that people would advise?

Hi

Bring plenty of sunscreen and the sun can be very hot indeed

Bring insect repellent and an after bite pen

Try and pace yourself

Do some planning to make sure you enjoy all that is on offer and try to vary where you eat all three main meals of the day as much as possible

If anything is not quite right or if you need something say to the concierge staff right away

Try and visit at least one historic site to learn about the history and culture of Mexico

Tips for future travellers

Insect repellent. Take plenty. 50% deet is recommended. That tan cost 1000s, you don’t want angry red bumps spoiling that look.

Room spray. It combats that tropical funk that many confuse with mould/must. It’s also useful in the bathroom, all that rich food and drink!!

There’s a washing line in the shower room but this only serves to get a garment from wringing wet to damp. Bring along a travel washing line (a bit like a thin bungee - available from Amazon or Millets or Blacks) and stretch this from the balcony railing to the chair on the balcony. Your swimsuit/bikini/shorts will dry in no time at all.

If you are from the UK, your hair straighteners will NOT get hot enough. Don’t bother bringing them unless, they are dual voltage.

Oh yes, if you intend to phone home and you've got a smart phone, install the Skype App and create and load, a Skype account from you PC. Switch off 3G and use Wifi in the hotel's reception. Wifi might be available elsewhere on resort but the best signal is in reception.

You could take along a TP-LINK TL-WR700N and a short Ethernet cable and with this you can create your own 'solid' WiFi bubble for phone, iPad or laptop connectivity.

Top Ruins for learning about the ancient civilizations: Chichen Itza, Coba, Tulum, Ek Balam

Top all around attractions for "park" type activities: Xcaret, Xel-Ha

Top Snorkel areas: Puerto Morelos, Akumal, Cozumel

All these are "googleable" and if you go to the "jump to specific forum" box type the cities (not Xcaret or Xel-Ha) in and peruse the posts and Top Questions for more information.

Bring a waterproof wallet and a waterproof camera case/housing. You'll be in and out of the pool, ocean and rain there, a lot.

There is a tour that combines 1/2 day of Tulum and 1/2 day at Xelha. We did this on our first trip to Mexico and it was perfect. Our 2nd trip we went to Xcaret and stayed for the dinner & show in the evening. A great way to learn about their history. The show was well worth staying for.

I had no problem using my iPhone and iPad in block 7 .

Remember the mossie spray.

Watch out for the sand mites as you walk along the beach in the seaweed. I got some nasty red bites worse tha mossie bites last week.

Another tip the lifts break down a lot and it could be for a week. Therefore don't request a high floor unless you are fist and able.

We stayed in room 7301 a top floor corner room in block 7 with a side ocean view. It had a view over main resort and was central to everywhere.
