There's a Casa Margarita* rental on the north side of town. It's a big oceanfront house with a pool.
*Just thought you might like the name.
Hmmm. Do I need to be a lottery winner ;)
Puerto Morelos was great (I travel non-ai)...I did lots of research and found great information from a bunch of sites..some I listed below. Being around town square gave me lots of choices for meals (my favourite was Tacos.com...excellent breakfasts for 60 pesos, delicious tacos, seafood dinner..yum), there's a little grocery store to buy items (beer, snacks, BUG SPRAY LOL etc.) for my room, ATM and money exchange, OXXO, internet cafe etc. I had everything I needed in a nice little compact area.
There’s also www.cancunmap.com/puerto-morelos-hotels.html
I liked these sites a lot as well:
Love this aerial tour site..they’ve made some really cool changes to it:
As for “what's the best of the best? “..sorry, I don’t know how to answer that for you...best of the best sounds like a lot of money could be involved and I pretty much travel budget lol. I wanted to be within a block or so of town square and I ended up at Hacienda Morelos. Other places that I looked in to were Posada el Moro, Casa Caribe, Cabanas Puerto Morelos, Casa Tucan (it’s the only one out of my budget but it looks like a nice place). There’s a newish (to me) place that I made note of as well...La Casa del Mar (looks pretty good).
There's a fair number of people on this forum that don't go AI. Just create your threads and people will answer. :-D
its expensive but the royal residences look amazing :)!
I haven't stayed there yet - just came for a day trip . . . I went to the Little Mexican Cooking school for the day and spouse checked out the beach & beach bars - happy day for both of us! http://www.thelittlemexicancookingschool.com/
After this, we decided that the next time, we need to come stay here at least for a few days - we have a hard time dragging ourselves away from Isla Mujeres! It seemed much quieter than Isla, and I loved walking the long beaches here. We usually stay in simple Mexican hotels - I think we would stay in this hotel: http://www.posadaelmoro.com/ , though I would need to research more. I just bought new maps from the mapchick to better my researching! And I highly recommend getting them: http://www.cancunmap.com/
Happy planning! :)
Casa Margarita and the other 2 houses adjacent are really lovely but you are right a little pricey. Casa del Vientos is good too. more economical condos on or near the beach would be Casita Blanca, Arrecifes, Corales, Velas, Tortugas. Then opposite the beach our bed and breakfast Casa Caribe or in town El Moro is good too.
One day i will write another blog, sorely needed i know
If you want to go local and are willing to be a couple of miles from the beach check this out:
In that side of town food bought on the street is awesome. Whole barb chickens, tacos, qdillas, sopas, and chalupas (sp). Live among the locals in an awesome house. I love many places on the beach side of town too but if you don't need to be on the beach and want a true real Mexico non AI vacation take a look.
Thanks for all the great tips!
We stayed in PM early June this year. Found a condo on home away. Villas Playasol. It was right on the beach and walking distance to everything. Also had a big pool. The condo itself is a bit dated and small. But we are budget vacationers and usually don't spend a lot of time inside (except for when it rained two days straight when we were there). So a small older condo didn't bother us much.
Loved the small Mexican town feel. Ate at several restaurants. Mostly just walked around at night and looked for a spot until we found something that looked good.
Stayed nonAI in Akumal last year and loved it too.
Just wanted to tack on something I just read..Hacienda Morelos appears to have opened their restaurant and bar area..that's very cool as the furniture was awesome...carved, heavy wood. Nice to have to have an option to eat right at the hotel. Am excited to read people's experiences there. :-D
