First TimerTrip Report; Non AI

Just returned from a 9 day stay in PM. First time in PM but have been coming to Mexico and staying at AI and non-AI condos for the past 10 years (including other "small" towns of Isla Mujeres, Bucerias, Ixtapa, Los Ayala/Rincon Guayabitos and Punta Mita).

Arrival: Arrived on a Sunday afternoon, only a small line up at customs so we breezed through in a couple of minutes. Waited for our luggage for a couple more minutes and we hit a green light. However, we still got pulled over for a cursory search of one of our carry on bags. First time that happened after a green light.

Transfers: Pre-booked with Canada Transfers at $80 round trip. Canada Transfer still accepts CDN$ at par so we paid CDN$ on arrival. A company rep was waiting for us at the exit and had us in our vehicle and on the road within a couple of minutes. Driver supplied cold face clothes and cold bottled water. We also pre-booked a grocery stop at $25 for an hour stop. Driver took us approx. 10 minutes towards Cancun and stopped at a walmart grocery store. We had our grocery list with us so we were in and out in 35 minutes. There are some grocery stores in PM, but we are glad we stopped at Walmart for a much better selection and much better prices. For the return trip, our driver showed up right on time. This is the 3rd time we have used Canada Transfers and have had great service all 3 times.

Weather. Hot and humid. Mostly clear skies and sunny. Only 5 minutes of rain in 9 days. We planned to do nothing other than lie on the beach in the shade, so weather was great for us. However, if you plan to do tours, the heat/humidity would get to you.

Beach. We stayed in a condo a 15 minute walk north of town square. Great beach in front of the condo and all the way into town. All sand, no coral. Some seaweed but not enough to affect anything.

Town. We were there during low season so Town was very quiet. However there are numerous restaurants to chose from. Also, the typical souvenir stores, etc. We had approx. 7 meals in town, and all were good. As restaurants reviews are so subjective, I will say we never had anyone meal that was much better or worse than any other.

Colonia. Across the highway. Would recommend a walk through this area for more of a real Mexico village feel. Also, had a dinner at one of the corner restaurants, which was just as good as in PM but much cheaper.

Getting around. Easy walking town but also numerous taxis. If it was too hot for the 15 minute walk from town to our condo there was always a taxi available for 25 pesos (approx.$2.00).

Safety/security. In our 10 years of coming to Mexico we have never had any concerns and PM was the same. No issues wandering around town during the day or early evening.

Bugs. Only negative of our trip, the bugs/sand fleas that come out right after dusk. We got caught twice at dinner at approx. 8 pm. I took the brunt of the bites, over 100 bites/welts from ankle to knee within a few minutes. Off was no help. A trip to the pharmacy for pills and cream helped. After the second time we got caught we kept a close watch of the time and made sure we were home by 7:45 pm. We had a second floor ocean front condo so the ocean breeze and height kept the balcony clear of bugs at night, just stay off the streets after dark if you react to bug bites.

Overall, we enjoyed PM and would recommend to someone looking for a small town experience. Not sure I would rush back (we saw most of what there is to see) but glad we made the trip.

Nice report. Agree with the caution about heat and humidity. While researching during winter it always sounds fun to visit Coba or Chichen Itza, but that all changes once you step outside the airport. Something to consider for those who want to pre book their excursions. Wait till you are there.. Until you are there you don't realize how hot it will feel.

Thanks for sharing your trip. I always enjoying reading trip reports from people that aren't staying at all inclusive resorts.

Love the report, we had a similar great experience in POMO a few weeks back for a stay @ Casita Blanca. We love it in POMO and non-AI as well, so many options and dont feel we need to strap on the feedbags for vacation. Unfortunately, I got the brunt of the bug bites too.. but all in all--its a great place!

If you are coming from an AI, the taxi fare will likely be the same for the taxi to take you to the Puerto side of PM as to take you to the Colonia. If you want to see both sides, take a taxi to one side and then take a collectivo to the other side, and then take a taxi back to your hotel. Unfortunately the collectivos no longer run to any of the resorts.

We stayed at Casita Blanca. An older complex but well maintained. One thing I liked about this complex was it has its own loungers and palapas on the beach.

To colonia we took a taxi. From our condo the fare was 30 pesos ($2.50 US$) for the taxi (not per person). We had 4 people so probably just as cheap as the collectivo.

Unfortunately the taxi fares are much higher to/from the AI's - anywhere from 100-250 pesos.
