Margaret River at Christmas Time Input

We are thinking of visiting MR for a week after Christmas and looking for some info on the weather and beaches.

Is the ocean warm enough to swim?

Is it hot 24 hours or is there normally an afternoon sea breeze and cooler at might?

What about the flys? Do they make spending time at the beach unbearable?

Appreciate any input. Thank you.

<<Is the ocean warm enough to swim?>>

Absolutely yes. Geographe Bay (on the Busselton/Dunsborough side of the Margaret River region) is one of the warmest spots you will find, with white sand beaches and sheltered waters of the bay. Please bear in mind that this is peak season, school holidays run from mid December to end of January so bookings are extremely popular - many families renew their booking annually for the following Christmas, so book early.

Western Australia has summer heatwave patterns of about 3 to 5 days, but usually there is a late morning/afternoon sea breeze to cool things down.

The flies are unfortunately present due to original European settlers importing cattle and sheep. Flies seem to be at their worst when there is little or no breeze, or when you are inland away from the coast. They can be annoying, but the problem is not insurmountable, just like dealing with annoying mosquitoes in tropical areas - there are plenty of options, which you can buy here or bring with you - just keep a small spray or roll on bottle of repellant in your carry bag. A tip is to spray your hat to keep them away from your face.

Re flies: I have a different experience to Kerry (sorry Kerry :)) Ive found most years the flies are worse on the coast, particularly around the northern half of the region. The further inland, the less flies. Flies can be in plague proportions throughout the Dunsborough/Yallingup area during summer. Although fly numbers can vary each year, dining alfresco near the coast is pretty much mission impossible and last December was no exception. Sometimes the difference in fly numbers between east and west of Caves Road can be quite noticeable. Further inland (MR township) has had by comparison far less flies in past years.

But..if its a really bad fly season, they can be a nuisance everywhere in the southwest.

Christmas weather can be like a lottery. I have had Xmas there one year and needed to find a store open to buy more clothing due to a cold snap and then another year it was over 43c for multiple days in a row. Can highly recommend the caves on those really hot days.
