Where in Campania/Napes region to end our tour of Italy?

Planning a tour of Italy with my girlfriend. We fly into Venice and and home from Naples. We've already booked hotels for Rome, Modena and Florence, but we're unsure where to finish our stay.

Most of the holiday we have a pretty hectic schedule so we'd like our last 3 days to be fairly chilled. The only thing we really want to see in the area is Pompeii, other than that happy to spend most of the time relaxing.

Ideally we want to stay in Capri or Sorrento, but we don't have much budget left. We've found some reasonable hotels in these areas, but have hear they are expensive once you are there.

Really want to know how expensive people have found Sorrento and Capri and also if there are any other areas we should be considering.

forgot to mention, we weren't really planning on hiring a car so where ever we stay has to be easy to get to by public transport

Why don't you consider actually staying in Naples? There are very reasonable B&Bs there and plenty of local transportation. You can do a day trip from there to Pompeii via train and even Capri via boat. Capri is much more expensive than Naples for everything.

If you have budget issues, just stay in Naples, there are few places as fascinating as that amazing city. Take a day trip to Capri from Naples (yes, both Capri and Sorrento are expensive) - I assume you are going in high season (between April 20 and October 30?)

There's no reason to skirt Naples and you can easily reach Pompei from there.
