Australia in August

First timers to Australia and planning an August trip - After spending time in Sydney and surrounding area with family what would be best for rest of a three week holiday -

Melbourne and Gt Ocean Road, Ayers rock or Byron Bay

The last week we may relax at Whitsunday islands. Opinions please.

Hi jaspers, how do you intend traveling, by car, coach, plane? There is a lot of distance between the places you have mentioned and many options. August can be a bit cool along the Great Ocean Road, but seeing you are from Suffolk you may not be concerned lol. It is quite easy to hire a car from either Sydney or Melbourne and then travel down Great Ocean Road for a wonderful trip with great scenery, good eating and also to get a taste of some of our wineries. Ayres Rock, Uluru, is best flown to if you have a short time here, otherwise it is a long drive with not a lot to see along most of the way apart from open desert type area. Byron Bay?, what age group are you in? Interested in surfing and lying around and not much else? - this may be a place for you. The Whitsunday Islands are wonderful and worth visiting. If you finished up here I would suggest flying home out of Brisbane.

I'd go to Darwin and the Top End. It's a fascinating area and the weather is just about perfect in August.
