Brisbane or Melbourne?

I've got a weekend free in Australia and can choose Brisbane or Melbourne? I love to fish (fly-fish preferably) and prefer beaches and unique nature, adventure based experiences...which would you suggest? Single traveler on a budget.

What time of year? Where else in Australia will you be visiting?

Spend your time in Brisbane and go over to Moreton Island. It ticks all your boxes.

But there's no fly fishing, but there is surf fishing. Takes about 75 mins via boat to get there. 95% of the island is a National Park, with freshwater lakes, abundant sealife, untouched beaches and large sand dunes

As Mia has asked - what time of the year? Am I right in assuming you will be based in Sydney? If you are based in Sydney, it is basically half way between the two cities and gettting to either Melbourne or Brisbane is very easy.

Definitely Brisbane, as LTB says you have Moreton Island, and then there’s Straddie (Stradbroke Island), Sunshine Coast and the Gold coast. All of these destinations are within easy reach of Brisbane.

LTB has given shortcuts for Moreton Island; here are some for the rest –

Flyfishing can be had at Lake Eildon, a couple of hours north of Melbourne.

It's a big water storage, with mountains, hiking, great scenery, houseboats and a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets in the area.

You can stay in many towns/hamlets around the Lake, like Jamieson, Goughs Bay, Eildon, Bonnie Doon or even Mansfield. There is a brewery and great country pubs. It's an all seasons destination too. It would give you a real taste of country Australia. Here's a link:
