Best places for skiing in aus

Seeking advice on the best place to go skiing in Australia. We live in far north qld and are doing a driving and camping south east cost holiday. We have never seen snow or been skiing before so any advice is greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Camping in winter in the snow is probably not a good idea for a first timer.

Threadbo might be a good place to begin your investigations.

Thanks. Being from the hot north qld we won't be camping in the snow but hopefully will get some sort of ski and stay package

Since you mention camping what will you be driving? I don't know but it might make a difference to which roads are easiest and also maybe whether you should stay at the skifields or could stay within daily driving distance of the skifields. If you stayed nearby would you be interested in visiting different skifields on different days? Do you want something in NSW or are you planning to go further south to Victoria? Do you want to try tobogganing or anything else as well as skiing? What about budget, dining out or self-catering, those sorts of preferred details?

In terms of accommodation options, Mt Buller is probably the best option in Victoria.

We have a subaru forrester and keen for either NSW or VIC, happy with any form of accommodation based on a budget around the thousand mark. We are traveling the south east coast so don't want to blow all our budget on a weeks skiing.but happy to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Hi Jody - one of the more economical ski resorts in NSW is Selwyn Snowfields accessed from the town of Adaminaby. Great for first timers for snow play or skiing & boarding or a bit of tobogganing with a dedicated toboggan slope and not as crowded as the major NSW resorts of Thredbo & Perisher Blue. Also much more affordable for accommodation and ski passes should you decide to "hit the slopes"

Hi Jody, IMO nothing beats staying right in the snow. At Perisher (NSW) the Sundeck hotel is right in the snow, in fact you walk out the front door and you are at the first ski lift! It's not an upmarket place but it would suit any first timer and caters to a younger crowd, which it sounds like you are part of.

Or, you could stay outside of the snow zone at Jindabyne and have a 3/4 hour drive every day to either Perisher or Thredbo. Jindabyne has camping as well as caravans, motels, hotels and apartments. This is more budget friendly than staying right in the snow.

Don't forget that if you have to hire your skis or snowboard it adds to the cost. Then the cost of the lift passes on top of that.

Mt Hotham is Victoria's highest ski mountain and has lots of ski in/out accommodation to suit all budgets. It is more likely to have skiable snow in June than the other Victorian mountains.

Here's a second vote for Selwyn Snowfields. When we lived in Canberra, we took our kids there first for an afternoon of tobogganing and, later, we took them there to learn to ski. We appreciated that it was a less expensive option to the big resorts and enjoyed the smaller number of people that were there. We always had a good time at Selwyn.

Hi,

Having skiied in Oz for years we tried NZ a few years ago and havent skiied in Oz since. You can pay for a weeks skiing in Queenstown with car hire, et al for less than three days in Thredbo with much better skiing and smaller crowds.

Cheers.
