Flinders Ranges Advice Please

We (couple in 50's) are visiting Adelaide for 3 nights in October. thought we may take another week to visit the Flinders Ranges whilst in SA. Advice would be appreciated on

- hire car or campervan from Adelaide for 8 days, we have hired a campervan previously and travelled from Alice to Uluru to Kakadu and DaRwin- loved it. We joined 4wd tours in Kakadu.

-we have not driven 4wd but if we hired one that allowed dirt roads would we be able to access a lot more places? Are the roads mostly sealed? Can you access plenty without going on dirt roads?Have read different views on this.

-is it practical to keep moving on and staying at a new locatIon or base in 1 or 2 places?, we are planning to return the vehicle to Adelaide.

Have just started researching and hoping your input will lead me in the right direction, thanks.

1. Re: Flinders Ranges Advice Please

When exploring the flinders we found plenty of unsealed roads and good sealed ones too.

We had an AWD not a 4wd and had few problems. Wouldn't have liked it to have been wet tho.

But IMO u need to go on the dirt.

We stayed at wilpena and did day trips.

Thanks for reply. Will research 4wd/ campervan hire. What is the difference between AWD and 4 WD? Please excuse ignorance! Do all 4wd hire allow you to go on unsealed roads?
