The BIG issue is the weather. As GW said, based on the weather, you should go from north to south. That means you will be heading south as the weather warms up. And earlier on at least the weather will be tolerable in Cairns.

Closer to the equator is tropical so it's warm to hot and humid and in what is generally called summer it is the wet season.

Further from the equator there are four season and while summers can be hot winters are cold.

So our winter is better for the north of the country.

Our summer is better for the south of the country.

Spring and autumn are pretty good everywhere and a good time if trying to travel around various areas within a short space of time.

If you are starting in September then that's spring so start up north as the others have said. Move south as summer approaches.

How long will you be in Australia? Do you want 'warm enough for swimming' type weather or just pleasant weather? Summer would be great for Tasmania, autumn would be alright though getting colder again. Some of us like the idea of going in winter for the snow but I am guessing that would not be your ambition :-)

Driving south from Cairns you will have the sun behind you most of the time. Driving north you will be driving into the sun which is uncomfortable.

Therefore I recommend driving south from Cairns.

Well, I'm counting three 'experts' dev, disregarding yourself of course. I assume you posted on a previous thread. (yes OZ, I know what happens when you assume)

And the best time to visit Tasmania is February - or as close to that as you can get.
