customs food restrictions

Hi,

We are visiting Australia and New Zealand next week and will be camping. Can anyone tell me if I'll be allowed to carry food like cereal bars (individually wrapped and sealed from the US), dry cereal (again sealed), and snacks such as roasted & spiced peanuts? What about sealed coffee powder? I will make sure I declare everything on arrival. I am travelling with small kids and they do better with food they are used to - will make my holiday more pleasant :-)

Thanks

1. Re: customs food restrictions

As a very broad generalisation, packaged processed foods are often permitted. The big issue - as you say - is that you declare it all. If Quarantine don't allow it, it will be taken from you and destroyed.

Just declare everything to avoid problems. :)

All of these items can be easily purchased in Australia, the agency you need to declare them to is AQIS (Australian Quarantine Inspection Service) and isnt one of the delights about going overseas is trying the local food?

Apparently not for picky children. One technique I used with success was to get them all excited about the prospect of something different :-)

The declaration you have to fill out on the plane will ask you if you are carrying anything containing nuts, grains or seeds, amongst other things. You you will need to declare these items but if they are processed and packaged you will most likely be allowed to keep them.

Just got back. No problem. I took coffee, granola bars and some roasted corn kernels. Like others have stated, just check that you are declaring. They only wanted to look at the corn kernels when my husband called them corn nuts. I don't think they want raw nuts, only roasted.

I don't blame you for wanting to bring certain things. I always do, especially since you are camping. I would bring spices too.

Herbs and spices are things that cause great heartache for travellers to Australia - especially those coming from Asia.
