Kakadu suggested itinerary

10 days to spend in Kakadu/Mt Litchfield (late June) - any suggested itineraries?

We arrive into Darwin & are unsure as to whether or not to hire a camper van & explore or whether we would be better of hiring a 4 way drive & then paying for accommodation or do we book a tour. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

You could hire a 4WD camper. When we go back that's what we will do. Accommodation in the area tends to be expensive and of a very average standard.

In 10 days I would add Katherine and Mataranka to the itinerary.

Just a suggestion:

4 days in Kakadu itself

2 days in Katherine/Katherine Gorge/Mataranka

2 days Litchfield.

2 days in Darwin.

Eva's itinerary is a good one, but it really depends what you want to see and do.

If you are hiring a 4WD to really get into the area and/or if you like longer bush walks, you could easily spend longer in Kakadu - say 5 nights, then 2 nights Katherine, 1-2 nights Litchfield, 1-2 nights Darwin. Or even drop Katherine and stay longer in Kakadu. I would only recommend this if you have some experience with 4WDing.

If you are only planning on going to a particular spot by 4WD, say Jim Jim Falls, then you might be better off hiring a 2WD and getting a 4WD day tour from Kakadu. If you would like to include Mataranka as well I'd add an extra night in Katherine - so 4 nights Kakadu, 3 nights Katherine, 1 night Litchfield, 2 nights Darwin.

Hope this helps.
