car/campervan hire

Hi!

We are a couple and are visiting Australia in end May. We arrive in Sydney and fly back from Melbourne.

Initially, we had planned to take our friends campervan for the whole journey. However, now we are thinking of hiring a car and staying in holiday parks/ YHA.

We are plannning to drive from Sydney uptill Brisbane/ Gold Coast. Fly from there to Cairns for a diving trip and fly from there to Melbourne. Our route would be along the coast. However, we would love suggestions of an itinerary from sydney to gold caost.

1. Which holiday parks are worth staying? We would like to do a combo of YHA and parks.

2. What kind of accomodation would be cheap in parks?

3. If we want a campervan experience, would the drive on the great ocean road, be a nice experience?

Hiring a car and staying in motels or onsite cabins in caravan parks, which in many cases are like mini resorts with good facilities would be more economical than hiring a campervan.

The Great Ocean road is windy for much of its length. There is plenty of accommodation in most towns to suit all budgets and the time you will be travelling will be off peak. If you intend to visit the GOR from Melbourne you will need 2 to 3 nights to really get a feel for it. However you can do it with a 1 night stay but your trip will be rushed and you might not enjoy it as much.

Coming from Melbourne there is an information centre at the service station just north of Avalon airport which will enable you to get as much information as you need. If you do a search on the GOR forum you will also find plenty of recent posts that will be helpful.

www.visitvictoria.com.au will also provide more info as well as an example, www.big4.com.au will give information on cabins in caravan parks.

A google search on caravan parks in Australia will show heaps of info on what type of accommodation is available and the facilities the parks will offer as well as some idea of the costs involved.

When are you planning this trip? One of my favourite spots is the White Albaross holiday park at Nambucca Heads. Great cabins & a better than average bistro on site. But if you're planning your trip in school holidays (look them up), you'll need to book WELL in advance.

Other good spots on the way north, with the same caveat - Woolgoolga, Evans Head, Brunswick Heads.
