Melbourne to Byron Bay

Hi all!

My friend and I are needing to drive from Melbourne to Byron and because of when we start work we have to leave on Boxing day. I was just wondering what the fastest route to take would be considering the terrible traffic there will be. I'll be doing most of the driving so we'll probably have to make two stops instead of just one.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

You must avoid the coastal highways at all costs at that time.

Head to Seymour on the Hume, then via Shepperton to get to the Newell Highway and follow it as far as Coonabarbran, then via the Oxley Highway to Tamworth, up the New England to Tenterfield, then via the Bruxner Highway to Lismore and there's then a much-travelled back road direct to Byron Bay through Bangalow.

That last leg from Bangalow to Byron is important as it avoids the Ewingsdale Road in from the Pacific Highway which is a carpark at that time of year.

Thank you Luigi,

Do you know (or does anybody else) know where it would be best to stop for a night?

Thanks

For a one night, half way stop: Dubbo.

For two stops, around about Narrandera/West Wyalong and Armidale/Glenn Innes.

I agree with the route set out by Luigi with one exception.

From Tamworth take the New England Highway to Armidale , then turn east and take the Waterfall Way via Ebor to Grafton. From Grafton take the Summerland Way to Casino and the Bruxner to Lismore. This route still keeps you off of the Pacific Highway and is shorter.

The road from Armidale to Grafton via Ebor is shorter but not quicker. Toward the end of a long driving day its a nightmare. If you follow Luigi's route the only winding section coming down from the range is between Tenterfield and Drake. Other than that its a pretty straight run.

And I'd take the two stop option
