Itinerary for Great Barrier Reef, Sydney and Melbourne

We are planning our first trip to Australia and as of now are planning for 10 days to see Sydney, Melbourne and Great Barrier reef. Is this practical and also what would a reasonable itinerary be? We are looking to visit April of 2015.

Well you have plenty of time to plan this great trip.

As you have your cities worked out it will be easy to get some ideas of what you want to see in these places and figure out the best way your flights will work.

If you come up with an itinerary we can help you further. It depends on where you fly into etc.

10 days actually here in the country? As this will be a tight timeframe.

It all depends on what you want to do while you are here as to if its feasible or not. Of course you can if you just want a highlight trip and rushing, but if you want to explore more around wither Sydney or Melb, I suggest you choose one city and the reef. Are you travelling with children as well? You will at least lose 3/4 of a day getting to Cairns as well with travelling time as its a 3.5 hr flight, not including check in ad transit time at both ends.

We will not have children. Is there enough to do between Sydney, cairns and Great Barrier Reef for 10 days?

People spend 10 days in just one of those places, so yes, plenty to do. The issue you have with fitting in a 3rd separate destination like Melbourne is the time spent relocating, you end up loosing half a day. Also Melbourne as a destination deserves more than just a couple of days, unless you want to see just the city and not anything outside the city, which is what tourists generally come to Melbourne to see. What you can do is split your time between Cairns and Sydney and do both areas justice (4 days Sydney, 5 days Cairns and a travel day), or spend a couple of days somewhere like the Hunter Valley outside of Sydney or perhaps Canberra, which are small enough that you could enjoy with just a 2 day visit. You could then spend 3 days Sydney, 2 days Canberra or Hunter and 4 days Cairns.
