We spent two nights in the Blue Mountains. This gave us time to explore Katoomba and Leura as well as have the opportunity to visit most of the overlooks and take several short hikes. We spent 5 nights in Sydney and could have spent longer.

I think 2 days is enough in the blue mountains. there are plenty of short walks, some more difficult than others, nice scenery, a few attractions eg.scenic railway, lots of nice restaurants. the drive out thru jenolan (caves) and onto canungra walls is worth doing to get away from the normal tourist areas. dont go wandering off along remote tracks. lots of people go missing every year. some dont come back.

weather should still be cool up there, esp at night, as it's around 1000m but with the weather being so topsy turvy over the last few years it might be other wise.

sydney is worth as many nights as you can fit it. so much to see and do.

mid october should be warming up (see above comments). can be a bit windy that time of year.
