5/6 day drive out of Sydney

We are planning a five/six day excursion from Sydney by car. The first stop will be for 2 nights at Nelson Bay. We were then thinking of driving up to Lennox Head near Byron Bay and then to the Gold Coast but it looks a fairly long drive. Does anyone recommend another good destination about 2/3 hours drive from Nelson Bay and then a further one night stop before heading back to Sydney.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Bob,

What time are year are you thinking of doing this drive?

In 6 days you can comfortably reach the Gold Coast and return to Sydney at a leisurely pace.

Day 1 & 2 - Nelson Bay

Day 3 - Byron Bay

Day 4 - Gold Coast

Day 5 - Coffs Harbour (return journey)

Day 6 - Sydney

If you leave Nelson Bay after breakfast say 7am, you will be in Grafton for lunch and Byron Bay by early afternoon.

Too Easy,.

Hi Bob,

If you didn't want to head all the way up to GC then why not go inland on the way back.

1 & 2 Nelsons Bay

3rd Port Macquarie

4 Tamworth (Country Music Capital of Australia)

5 Polkolbein (Hunter Valley wine region)

and then back to Sydney

You can take Route 34 from Port Macquarie to Tamworth and then head South along the New England Highway to take in the Hunter Valley and back to Sydney.

bob, you could go all the way to the gold coast and back in 6 days but it would be a lot of driving.

i would estimate from nelson bay to lennox head would take about 6-7 hours.

perhaps head to somewhere like port macquarie about 2 hours or coffs harbour around 4 hours. a great little town right near coffs harbour is sawtell with a nice beach and if youre into golf a hit at bonville is a must. a bit pricey but a great course.

it would then take about 7 hours to drive back to sydney from coffs harbour.

Lennox is 9 hour drive from Syd so taking the 3 hour approx into account you ahve a number of choices... we usually go ex sydney

enroute to lennox we have stayed at Port Macquarie area..Crescent head is nice as is South West Rocks. We often daytrip with lunch at Cassegrain Vineyard.

Other places have been Nambucca Heads...nice and quiet with good views and often at Coffs which gets us to Lennox just after 11am with a late start. (9am)

Doing the two day back no other otion IMHO other than the Port Mac district but pre book onight if it will be a weekend

I also second Crescent Head and you can take the coast road from Crescent Head to Hat Head which is a lovely drive. Have a look on the thread below for additional information and suggestions regarding this coastal drive,
