Mobile Phones

Will be in Australia 24 June - 9 July and then New Zealand and we are wondering do European mobile phones (Vodaphone) work in Australia?

Or should we consider buying a mobile phone when we are there.Would appreciate suggestions/advice.

Thanks

european phones work in both aus and nz. if u dont have your phone set up for international roaming then u will have to buy separate sim cards for each country.

Vodafone will work fine in Australia and the coverage is pretty good.

It all depends what you need the phone for, if you only need it so that family can contact you while you are away then stick with your European Mobile. If you are going to be making a few calls then maybe buy a SIM card. You can bring your European mobile with you and just swap the SIM cards over (that way you will have a charger). They are pretty cheap and come with free credit.

Vodaphone will work pretty well in the major cities, but if your trip includes a visit at all to the NSW South Coast beware! We don't have Vodaphone coverage very well at all down here.

although the user's home country mobile network is vodafone doesnt mean they will use that network here, unless specifically chosen. by default the phone will search for the strongest coverage - you can then specify if you wish to have a certain provider.

My vodafone sim chip had NO coverage at all in Port Douglas and Cairns area if you are planning to go up there. Worked fine in sydney area.

we have no problem with vodafone on our part of the south coast nsw. in fact before telstra introduced next g vodafone was the only service we could get in our area (around bawley point). we have noticed a few black spots on trips south. wasn't aware bermagui was one of them. from memory it's ok in narooma.

Yes, we found that we couldn't get reception in Bermagui with Vodafone, but, Optus had better luck. Weird though was that Vodafone seemed to work occasionally, when we were literally on the beach, but, didn't really work when we were back at the holiday house.
