Transportation

Please advise the best form of transportation from Sydney cruise ship terminal to the airport. We have a very short time in which to get to the airport.

IF a taxi is the best way do you recommend a particular compay and do they use a flat rate or the meter and do you make a reservation ahead of time?

Definitely a taxi if pushed for time. Generally there are taxis there waiting when the cruises get in.

How short will you be? Do you have the option of a later flight on the same day? Cruises can & often are a couple of hours late in depending on conditions at sea..

Hi we will catch a taxi the ship is to dock at 5:00 a.m. but of course needs time to clear we are counting on a 9:00 departure- our flight is at 11:00 and it is a non-refundable ticket

Any cruise we have been on before arrives on time - I am wondering if the waters around Australia are different - maybe rougher seas etc.???

all taxi companies u will find at the terminal are fine so no need to recommend a specific company. dont think it will be possible to make a reservation ahead of time. fares are as per the meter. allow 30 mins to get to the airport.

Will your ship be docking at Wharf 8, Darling Harbour or at the Cruise Terminal, Circular Quay?

If it's at Circular Quay, you shouldn't have any problem getting a taxi. With regard to Wharf 8, I'm pretty sure there were lots of taxis there too last time we disembarked there - no flat rate metre tho'.

If you are worried about transport to the airport, find out if the cruise line has a coach going to the airport as sometimes that can work out at a very reasonable rate. If you are thinking of this, then don't reserve your coach too late (ie, the last day or two on board the ship for example) otherwise they may not have any room for you - this is what friends of ours found.

Definitely take a taxi, as the train/bus stops aren't that close or fast enough as you're short on time.

If you know what time you are coming to shore you could book a car service so you'll know you'll have someone ready and waiting to transfer you.

I haven't used this company before but they look fairly reasonable: http://www.sydneyhirecars.com/

Can you tell the Cruise Director or 'whomever' that you have an early flight and need to be amongst the first passengers off the ship upon arrival and customes clearance?

There will be taxis readily available? What day of the week does your ship arrive into Sydney? If it's a weekend, then the traffic will be light. Even a weekday at that hour, you're going against city bound traffic when heading to the Airport.

Enjoy your cruise and enjoy Australia!

Actually,

Just had another thought - if the ship is coming into Circular Quay, there's a train station at Circular Quay (not sure how much luggage you have so you may want to jump in a train to either Circular Quay Train Station or CENTRAL train station).

There is a train station at both the International and Domestic Airport terminals.

Are you taking a domestic or International flight from Sydney?

A taxi should get you there without any hassle. The fare on the meter will probably be around $40 (give or take).

If you really are prone to stressing and worrying about these things, arrange a hire car in advance. A previous poster recommended one campny. I can also recommend Green Tomato cars www.greentomatocars.com.au. Their all Prius fleet are only around 10-15% more expensive than taxis, flat rate, based on KMs travelled is quoted at the time of booking, and all trips are double carbon offset. You also have the security of knowing that a car will be waiting for you rather than having to join a queue of other cruise pax waiting for a cab.

nige9359 - transportation still exists, but it's a little different now. Australia has started sending its petty thieves to work in London pubs.
