ideas for week away close to Sydney

Hi,

I'm travelling to Austrailia with my husband and 18 month old baby in late April and whilst we have 2 weeks booked up with friends in the Blue Mountains and Tasmania, I still have a week to organise. This will be the lfirst week in May. We will already have a done a fair bit of travelling around and flights so I'm looking to go somewhere within a few hours of Sydney where there'll be plenty for us to do for a week.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Within a few hours includes everywhere east from Adelaide to Queensland if you are prepared to fly to this final destination. Some information about your interests would help narrow things down.

If you really want somewhere in driving distance of a few hours, then you might start to come a gutser on the "plenty of things to do for a week" unless you really like relaxing and going the beach and for bush walks, but I would say somewhere around the Bateman's Bay area would be a contender. There's a better than average range of things to do around there (search on Mogo) and it's also striking distance to Canberra and surrounding towns such as Braidwood (which is on the way) or Bungendore.

just remember that May is nearly our winter so do you want sunshine or cooler weather ?

It is likely you will need to hire a house to stay but this is feasible around Batemans Bay. But it will feel like a bit like it is 'closed' for the winter season.

Alternative is to fly north to Byron Bay where it will be warmer with full range of tourist things open, restaurants etc plus close to Queensland.

dytokyo makes batemans bay sound like some english seaside town that closes down for winter. not the case. the bay has a permanent population of over 11,000 and thrives all year 'round. all the larger coastal towns, jervis bay, ulladulla/mollymook, narooma are in a similar situation. and may is a great time to visit the south coast of nsw. much quieter than the holiday season and the weather while coolish is mostly sunny. lots to do and see not only on the coast but the hinterland as well. and some great places to eat and drink.

Hi gingakate,

If you're planning not to fly, a bit closer to Sydney is the Illawarra coast - stretching from Stanwell Park through the coastal villages north of Wollongong and then down to Shellharbour and Kiama. Many seaside towns to visit or stay in and plenty of accommodation options. A seaside town like Kiama (1.5 to 2 hours' driving south of Sydney) gives you the best of both worlds. Good range of rental accommodation, beautiful coastline, not far from the wineries and other attractions of the Shoalhaven district and access to the hinterland (Saddleback Mountain, Jamberoo, Minnamurra Falls Rainforest, Bowral, Fitzroy Falls, Kangaroo Valley, etc), which are all easy daytrips. Some links are:

As others have said, May is tending towards our winter, but while it's a bit cooler the days tend to be sunny.

Hope you have a great trip!

Hello,

If you can drive, then I think somewhere on the south coast like Kiama or Gerroa would be excellent: beaches (if the weather is good), national parks and an easy drive to the Southern Highlands townships of Berrima, Moss Vale, Mittagong and the like.

Alternatively, head north to one of the costal locations like Avoca or Palm Beach or, if able to drive further, beaches around the Port Stephens area, like Shoal Bay or Nelson Bay.

Happy travelling!

Hi,

I used to take my kids every winter to the Port Stephens area when they were little. It's close to Sydney, about a two hour drive, beautiful beaches, plenty of cafes and walks, a few wineries, movie theaters etc.

We always had amazing luck and struck those beautiful clear sunny cool days that were warm enough to let the kids have a paddle in the water.

I don't think you could fault the region as a perfect family getaway, have a look at their tourism website for an idea.

Hi,

You should try to drive from Sydney to northern beaches of Wollongong. It only takes about 1 1/2 hours. You take the scenic route from Stanwell Park which will take you on the Grand Pacific Drive and over the Sea Cliff Bridge which spans over the ocean in Wollongongs northern suburbs. You will go thru quaint seaside villages (all on the sea front) like Scarborough, Wombarra, Coledale, Austinmer and Thirroul. Hope this helps.

It does all come down to your interests >??

As others have mentioned you have regions close to Sydney/

a) Hunter Valley - wineries.

b) Port Stephens - beaches / national parks.

c) Blue Mountains - scenic

d) Jervis Bay - South Coast - National Parks / Beaches,

e) Canberra - Capital of Australia.

f) Southern Hi glands

May is getting cool and its not suitable for swimming in the regions above, If you want to stay around Sydney then I would suggest hiring a car and casually driving down the South Coast to Jervis Bay for a few days and then head up to the Southern Highlands - Bowral / Mittagong / Berrima and stay a few days before heading down to Canberra to end your week stay.

Otherwise, if flying is not a problem I would head up to Noosa - the Sunshine Coast for a weeks stay. Hire a car and also explore the Hinderlands.
