When I first went to Melbourne, I thought the "Silver Tops" were the same as the Silver cabs in Sydney. It certainly was a different and inferior experience!

They are called Silver Service - the drivers wear a uniform which to me makes an enormous difference. The cars are always clean and the drivers are always friendly. I recommend these guys too.

Xiantraveller - all drivers are supposed to wear a uniform, not just silver services ones. I know some don't, but that isn't supposed to be the case.

All taxi drivers are also meant to bathe reasonably frequently

(oops, non-PC opinion)

I am a frequent Silver Service traveller and have had on-time and excellent service from them 99% of the time. But perhaps it helps booking a taxi for a specific time... and making allowances for busy times like Friday or Saturday 'going out' time...
