Sydney to Kiama: bus, train or car rental?

We are planning to spend 6 days at the Sydney Harbor Marriott and then go to Kiama for 3 nights. We will go to Kiama on a Friday and then go back to Sydney airport for an 11:00 am flight on Monday morning.

Is there a train, bus or car service that would work or is it necessary to rent a car? We won't really need a car once we get to Kiama and would rather not have to worry about driving back to Sydney and handing in the car before catching our flight? We are a family of 5.

Hi Lynn

You can catch a bus with Premier Buses .http://www.premierms.com.au/newhome/TimeTableDisplay.asp?ServiceCompany=PM&Service=4+++

or you can catch a train

http://www.cityrail.info/

The Premier Service is good as it can take you right to the airport on the return trip, but not in time for your 11.00am flight.

I'm not certain why you say you won't need a car while you're at Kiama. Do you have friends who will be able to drive you around? A lot of the stuff worth seeing and doing around Kiama, in the Illawarra and the Shoalhaven needs a car to get to. Friday, Saturday and Sunday just in Kiama itself would give you a good rest, but you'd miss out on a lot.

There's a good train service from Sydney to Kiama (it's the terminus of the intercity electric train service), but I'd be a little concerned about getting to the airport for an 11am flight. Domestic or international?

The morning peak hour trains don't stop at Wolli Creek (the changeover station for the airport line). You'd need to change to a suburban train at either Sutherland or Hurstville and go on to Wolli Creek and change again, or come into Central and catch the airport line back. For 5 of you and your luggage, the change at Hurstville could be rather a squeeze, as the suburban trains don't have luggage storage and would be busy with the morning commuters.

There are trains on the Monday morning departing Kiama at 05.49, 06.14, 06.50 and 07.24.

Assuming it's a domestic flight you're catching, here are some options from the transport info website (www.131500.info). The arrival at International Terminal Station would be a few minutes earlier

Our Monday morning 11:00 flight is a domestic flight to Cairns. We are going to Kiama to see friends. Although it would be fine to see some of the area, the main reason we are going is to see our friends.

From looking at your very helpful information, I am thinking we may need to rent a car. Is it an easy drive from Sidney to Kiama?

The drive is quite easy. About 2 hours from the centre of the city (or from the domestic airport, if you want to collect your rental car from there and avoid a one-way drop-off fee) if you drive straight through.

You could divert off the main highway and come down the Grand Pacific Drive which runs via the Royal National Park and through the townships that cling to the coast between the escarpment and the sea - it's a very pretty drive.

It is a rather tedious drive through suburbs until just beyond Sutherland. From then on it is easy, with much of the road to motorway standards.

With 5 of you + luggage you may need to hire a people mover/4WD type vehicle.

If you're catching a domestic flight, are staying with friends, and if they are willing to take you around to places, you probably won't need a car, so long as you are able to get up early enough to get back to Sydney for the 11am flight. You need to be at the airport around 10am and you should be checked in before you leave Kiama, so you are ready to deposit your luggage and go straight to the gate.

Some good options here. Some things to consider.

Train:

From hotel a taxi to central station is best if you have lots of luggage. The train trip to Kiama is very scenic in places, sit on the upper deck, left hand side for sea views north of Wollongong. An early start on the Monday should get you to the airport on time and my advice is to catch the train all the way to Sydney Central and change there for the airport line.

Check www.cityrail.info for timetables and fares. The rail service to the airport is not cheap if you have 5 people.

Car:

If you pick up a hire car in Sydney CBD be aware that the inner city toll roads have automatic tolling so you need to get an E-Tag with the car. For the 1st timer in Sydney a GPS unit is essential, the signposting assumes you know your way around. Once you leave the city, past Sutherland, look for the Grand Pacific Drive signs as posted earlier. This is one of the best coast roads you will find anywhere and well worth an extra hour.

Returning a rental (from a major company) at Sydney domestic terminal is easy. Head for the T3 arrivals and keep an eye open for the rental returns signs. You will return the car on the ground floor of the carpark, right between terminals 2 and 3 and just crossing the road puts you in the terminal.

Have a nice time in Kiama, its one of my favorite places.

10. Re: Sydney to Kiama: bus, train or car rental?

Thanks so much, Rennie,

If we rent a car, I was thinking we would rent it from an office near the Marriott on the day we are leaving Sydney and then return it to the airport. Is it complicated to get from the Marriott Harbor to the road going to Kiama?

We are a party of 5 and our friends are a party of 4 so we won't be able to share one vehicle. We are staying in a cottage right at the blowhole and within walking distance to their house so I am not sure if a car is necessary.

I looked at the train schedule and I think Jodi is right; we cannot make it in time for our 11 am flight.

Is their any kind of car or limo service that would drive us?
