Will be in Sydney for about a week Oct 2012

What should we see in the city and any suggestions about taking a tour outside the city to experience Australia?

Hi

How long will you be here? A day trip to the Blue Mountains is a popular one, if you'd like to see native animals you could combine it with a visit to Featherdale wildlife park.

I'd suggest having a read of the FAQ's on the rhs of this page - there is a long "must sees" one, plus some great trip reports that may help you plan your visit.

>>taking a tour outside the city to experience Australia<<

Please bear in mind that daytrips from Sydney (unless you fly interstate or way out west just for a day) will really only show you eastern New South Wales - the coastline north or south from the city (both well worth it), the Hunter Valley, or the Blue Mountains and perhaps somewhere like Jenolan Caves a bit further afield. Only a small slice of what Australia as a whole has to offer.

Depending on how much time you want to spend seeing Sydney and its immediate surrounds, you might consider renting a car and doing a 2 or 3 night drive (TA locals can suggest a number of good 'loop' trips from Sydney - some are among the trip reports in the FAQs).

Echoing mikey36, please having a look at the FAQs and 'must sees' and give us an idea of what might interest you.

October is a great time of year in Sydney (and the rest of Australia in general), glorious Spring weather and not yet getting hot - you should have a great time.

Once you have read the trip reports and FAQs as suggested you may want to come back with some more specific questions about the base way to get around.

There is plenty to do and see in and around Sydney to keep you busy for a week. If you want an 'out of city' experience you can still get that without leaving the city by visiting some of the nearby National Parks like Kurringai National Park which is still in Sydney and accessible by public transport or doing some of the many walks around Sydney. This website will give you some maps walkingcoastalsydney.com.au/brochures/harbou…

Cheers!

A visit to the national capital can be done as a day trip or overnight stay from Sydney, so if "experiencing Australia" doable from Sydney in your timeframe might include seeing our seat of government, museum of democracy, war memorial museum, the national museum of our social history, one of our major art galleries, and plenty of kangaroos easily accessible from an urban area, then please let me know if you would like more detailed information. Depending on when in October you might also catch one of our major festivals. Okay, that's my DE thing done (it's just a volunteer thing, don't read too much into it :-) I'm neither TA staff nor some sort of ultimate authority on the region). Now, can I just suggest that you might get more suggestions and more details about those suggestions if you join in a bit? Your original post was very broad and vague giving no indication of your interests and while we appreciate you coming back to say thanks it really doesn't indicate to us how/whether to proceed.

Stroll around Rocks Market on Saturday, click snaps at Circular Quay and Opera House, eat oysters at Cafe Sydney, climb Bridge, shop at Paddy's Market, dine at GPO, stroll Martin's Place on a weekday afternoon, visit Queen Victoria Building, drive to Blue Mountains for a day or two visit Scenic World, some sanctuary, drive down to Wollongong.

Most importantly read Tripadvisor & Lonely Planet guides to see what all Sydney has to offer and narrow down on the things that you'd like to do, cause everything that's posted above is what others (including me) like to do and believe/assume that you'd like too.
