Good pub or bar restaurant - The Rocks or Circular Quay?

I've looked through the restaurants list but don't seem to be finding what I'm looking for. We will be staying at Sir Stamford in April and would like a couple of recommendations for relatively inexpensive bar or pub type restaurants in the above area. Perhaps there is something unique to the area or one that has a great appeal without being exorbitantly priced. I know things are fairly pricey in the area but we would like to find something fun without breaking the bank!

The big and popular haunt for tourists is the Australian Hotel in The Rocks..

At the top of the hill on Argyle Street is the Lord Nelson, which as well as serving a good range of food brews its own beers on the premises. A boisterous but friendly atmosphere. Coming back down Argyle Street towards Circular Quay and turning left at the Garrison Church you will come to the Hero of Waterloo; also worth a visit. Both of these are historic old pubs, by the way.

I agree with fawlty - the Lord nelson is shabby but has 5 star views of the harbour from the top deck. Cheap and cheerful.

Could also try The Orient or The Paragon which is near McDonalds at Circular Quay.

As a local the places I would think about are the Belgian Beer Cafe and Lowenbrau German Bar/Restaurant which are moderately priced and serve great imported beer and decent food and are well geared up for the high volume tourist area you will be in. If you want inexpensive and appeal I don't think the answer is in bar/restaurants unless you like the appeal of busy trade. I would go for something like::

Lucetta Pizzeria e Trattoria

Highgate building

Shop 1, 127 Kent Street

Millers Point NSW 2000

which is just outside of the tourists' radar.

Although we enjoyed the Begian Beer cafe, the Lord Nelson was our favourite with its reasonably priced food and rooftop views.

Just to clarify I'm pretty sure the references to rooftop views would be from the Glenmore, just so people don't go trying to get on the roof of the Lord Nelson or go out of the way to find there's no view. Though you'd do worse accidentally ending up at the Lord Nelson, great beers!

You'll find quite a few of the pubs have cheap deals early in the week. Off the top of my head:

The Glenmore's steaks are good and only $10 on Mondays and Tuesdays,

The Harbourview has the same $10 steak deal Mon-Tue,

Lord Nelson has $7 meat pies and mash on Monday Nights

The Orient has $10 bar food Monday and $10 Burgers on Tuesdays
