Best Chinese Restaurant in Chinatown?

Hi, travelling to Sydney this weekend, staying in city and I hope to eat my way around Sydney! I am looking for a really good Chinese restaurant in Chinatown as every time we go we always find a restaurant that isn’t so great. We are after Suckling pig, BBQ Duck and some good seafood, I have read previous forums but would really like some more recent advice. If you can also recommend any other restaurants around Sydney please feel free. Thank you.

It's very hard to say which is the "best" Chinese restaurants as people will merely favour what they know. And as far as Chinese restaurants go, the common misconception is that they are all the same.

It comes down to whether they are predominantly dumpling houses, BBQ houses, seafood houses etc. There are well known restaurants that has reputations in those categories, and their standings have been tested over time. Suburban Chinese eateries where there is less competition, even if they are considered average, will still survive. Where as Chinese restaurants which aren't particularly great don't survive that long in Chinatown and usually change hands quickly without much fanfare.

It sounds like you've been really unlucky, or that you've chosen restaurants where the dishes you've selected have not been the house specialities.

Urbanspoon can give you great ideas as to which restaurants are currently favoured by the masses, but the feedback isn't necessarily by Chinese food critics.

Golden Century, East Ocean, Marigold, Zilver, have all been around for quite sometime and their popularity hasn't waivered over the years.

There are newer houses like Din Tai Fung and Chefs Gallery which have caught the taste buds of the newer generation - not just with their food but restaurant concept.

Lastly, there are a couple of not so well known restaurants which specialises in BBQ and noodles, along both the bottom end of Goulburn St and Dixon St, which are really popular with Asian locals

I'd agree with the above, and also add that looking for the best Chinese food in Sydney is akin to looking for 'The best European' food.

There are so many Chinese restaurants and the good ones specialize. Are you looking for Cantonese? Szechuan? Beijing? Shanghai? Or style - dumpling house? BBQ? Dim Sum?

Urbanspoon is a great resource as you'll get reviews by local foodies who know the scene well.

For good Cantonese Seafood the place upstairs at the Fish Markets is excellent.

Yeah, what is that place like Eva? I go to the markets once a week and everytime I walk past on the way to the fruit and veg place at the end, I look up and think "must try that place" - and we never end up going.

I think that one at the fish markets is called Fishermans Wharf. I have been quite a few times but always for yum cha. My brother usually goes there for xmas with his family as well I think he also goes for yum cha. It is very good. Not the cheapest around but very good and we have found it to be reliable which is important.

Unfortunately i also have had bad experiences in chinatown. These days I only go where people who I know are fussy recommend to me.

Reliability and consistency is everything in my books. That place sounds great, I really must make an effort to go lunch there and stop getting side tracked with the chocolate coated strawberry stand below...

Yeah it's a hard question..

so often now I eat and go wow, but with the restaurants catering for the Maccas generation an hour later I go...woooh MSG and all sorts of other flavour enhancement

IMHO if you want really good asian you need to find the local enclave (maybe hurstville for chinese)

Best chinese I've had this week was at Jiang Nai Chung ;)

Yeah local enclaves is definitely an alternative, Hurstville does seem to get alot of mentions. There's a few BBQ houses in Chatswood and Eastwood seems to be thriving, although there's quite a mixture of Korean and Vietnamese there also.

The good ones are not really inside China Town.... There are a couple of small specialized newly opened Chinese restaurants just opposite Chinatown behind No.1 Dixon Street. Depends on what your budget is and how authentic you are willing to go........... Personally I'd recommend "The Century" downstairs Star City or "Mr Wong" (3 Bridge Lane, Sydney) for a general westerner's taste buds, mid-high budget and looking for a nice vibe and designed interior environment. B.B.Q. King (18-20 Goulburn Street) always does great BBQ pork & chicken etc and very very cheap. If you are after really authentic Si Chuan food, there are 2 restaurants near Broadway that does hotpot etc.

JC, this is a post from last year, but thanks for adding some good info.

BBQ King seems to get a lot of poor reviews recently, not sure it is a great restaurant by any means. Certainly it is cheap but that's not what the OP asked about, now is it? To me it's exactly the kind of place they were worried about -somewhere fairly mediocre, maybe with a few good things on the menu but overall not impressive.

I agree that the best restaurants are *not* the ones on the southernmost block on Dixon St. These seem to seem to cater more to tourists and all have spruikers trying to get you in. Instead check the reviews and go a bit further afield. And if the restaurant is mostly empty on an otherwise busy night, think about why that might be!
