A Walking Tour and What Else?

Hello Everyone,

We will be in Sydney for 1 day after disembarking our cruise ship and will be staying at the Meriton Serviced Apartments Campbell located near Sydney Chinatown.

1st Day

Our group is considering the following sights on a 3 hr walking tour:

Town Hall, St Andrews Cathedral, Queen Victoria Building, Pitt St Mall, Hyde Park, Sydney Tower

Hyde Park Barracks, The 'Rum' hospital (The Mint), Sydney Hospital, Martin Place, The Tank Stream, Australia Square, Macquarie Place, Customs House, Circular Quay, Cadman's Cottage

The Rocks, Fort Denison, Luna Park, The Harbour Bridge, The Opera House

Which sights are "must see", "should see", "don't bother" and which ones should we include on this walking tour?

We will take a ride on the Manley ferry to view Sydney Harbour after the walking tour.

2nd Day (9a – 11a)

Darling Harbour for breakfast and a visit to Chinese Garden of Friendship

What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

Whereabouts do you plan to see the Tank Stream?

Sounds fine by me. Have fun keeping 30 of you together in the city centre eg George St, or are you splitting up?

Yes good point, it will be hard to stay together, so give each person a map of your route and agree to meet at Circular Quay for your ferry trip at a certain time.

Sounds like a good walk to me ... but as GW says, the Tank Stream ? Well if you can find an old document or two you can follow where it used to go but you won't see it. What's left of it is underground and it's not open to the public AFAIK.

I am assuming you are starting your walking tour from Town Hall ... I'm wondering if you are doing that by yourself or if it is more organised than that ?

If by yourself, once you walk along Macquarie Street and passed Hyde Park Barracks, The 'Rum' hospital (The Mint), Sydney Hospital, I'd forget about the route that then goes to "Martin Place, The Tank Stream, Australia Square", instead I would recommend you go to the Botanic Gardens which is opposite the State Library in Macquarie Street, walk down through the Gardens to the foreshore and around the foreshore to the Opera House and back to Circular Quay...go to google maps and you'll see what I mean.

Once at the Circular Quay you'll be near the ferry terminals and the railway station ... cross over the road where you see MacDonalds and walk up about 20 feet and you'll see Macquarie Place where there are statues and plaques re: early settlement.

Fort Denison you will pass by on a ferry to Manly, and Luna Park you can see from various vantage points around the harbour and Circular Quay - same with the Harbour Bridge.

If you are in Sydney on the weekend then The Rocks Market may be of interest to you and there are some nice but touristy type shops in the area in amongst the historic buildings plus free entry into The Rocks Discovery Museum.

Depending on what time you disembark and get your luggage squared away, you may want to consider a visit to the Sydney Fish Market for lunch which is about a 10-15 min walk from Star City Casino

... but with your group of 30 (?) you would find it very difficult if not impossible to get tables outside or inside if you wanted to sit down to eat ... it's hard enough getting a table / chairs for two people on any day of the week.

I think your Day 2 is about all you can fit in during that timeframe.

There are tours of the tank stream but only very occasionally and ticket is by ballot.

We've missed out the last couple of times but hopefully this time we'll get lucky.
