Times for NYE Sydney

Hi All

Iv searched this forum over and over for best vantage point for NYE I'v settled on Mrs MacQuaries Chair but can only find answers giving very vague times of when to arrive there.

What I would like to know is how early is early 6am? 12pm? 3pm? 6pm? 8pm?

I know all about the firework at 9 and families leaving, but would really like to ensure we get the best spot for viewing as we are travelling from Ireland and unfortunatly will not be back to Australia again.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated PLEASE!!

Thanks! :)

If you want the best spot you'll need to be prepared to arrive very early - before 9am. Take a picnic blanket to 'stake out your space' some kind of portable sun shelter and plenty of food & drinks- settle in for the day.

By mid-day you'll be at the back and by evening you probably won't get near it at all.

yes, bring lots of snacks and drinks with you.

bring a few blankets to stretch out and stake out your space.

take turns to wander around the botanic gardens and elsewhere in the city.

bring a pack of cards (so old fashioned but useful!)

What about the private or semi private functions, such as at the Botanical gardens, or close by hotels?

I think the time to arrive depends on how portable you are and also the weather. Lots of people 'stake out' a spot all day as described above and they get a fabulous view. However, this is the best approach if (a) you have a large group or a family and/or (b) you want to make a day of it. The atmosphere for the all-day crowd can be fun, but also tedious and uncomfortable if it is a hot or rainy day.

If you are good for a whole day, arrive by 9am, bring lots of supplies and lay out a blanket as your territory. An esky on wheels is good. Bring sunscreen, umbrellas and games. Some sort of portable light is handy. Wear a hat.

If you are a small group of 2-3 adults you can easily get to a good vantage point later in the day because you don't need a lot of space. Do not arrive at 7-8pm just before the 9pm show. Arriving at 9.30-10pm means you can go to a space vacated by a family. You probably won't be able to lay out a blanket, but you should find a gap for your bums, maybe on a towel. Smile at your neighbours and if they grumble, move on. Bring what you need in a small backpack; forget about a full picnic, but you could do sandwiches and drinks.

We have spent all day camped out in our spot with our kids and then had masses of young singles swoop in on us at 11pm, even lying on our rug, drinking beer and kissing! Whatever! It's a party and most people are relaxed.

You'll love it! Have fun in our beautiful city.

In reality, at about 11:30 pm everyone who has spent the day laying around on their blankets stands up and suddenly there's heaps of room. A fact we take advantage of most years when we make our way down to Cremorne Point after 11 pm. The problem with this strategy is that some vantage points, like Mrs Macs chair 'close' when they are deemed to be full. You're often better off further back and on a high point than close to the front surrounded by very tall people.

I agree Eva.

We do the same, and walk down towards the end of Raglan St just above Musgrave St wharf, at the little park.
