A great historic pub in the Rocks

Am heading to Sydney over Xmas and will once again

pull up a stool at the bar of Hero of Waterloo!!!!

This historic pub apparently had a shady and sordid past

If you chance by and its not too busy a bar person may

take you below to see the cellar cum dungeon with its

tunnel entrance

Alledgedly this tunnel led from Hero down to Port

Jackson,Sydney Harbours name before federation

Rum was smuggled up to Hero whilst human cargo

the oposite direction

As sailors heard of gold in Victoria they ditched ship

and went south to seek their fortune leaving captains

almost crewless but money to pub owner from ship

owners saw many a patron,s drink spiked and next

day out passed the heads ---instant sailor

Shanghai,d Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

What an interesting bit of trivia. I've probably walked past the place and never knew.

Have a lovely holiday!

Interesting. When I was there, I went into "the oldest pub in Sydney" and had a beer. Then later on, saw another "oldest pub in Sydney." Apparently there's a bit of disagreement onto who's the oldest

Think I read somewhere there were three

Fortunes of War on George

Hero of Waterloo on Lower Forte

& Lord Nelson a stones throw from Hero

About the oldest there was talk of one

being the oldest serving pub and another

the oldest licened pub

Must check but also a pub in Tassie

and don't know its name oldest in Aus

Long as they serve me I won't complain

Mr,Google tells me Lord Nelson the oldest continualy

licenced pub 1841

Fortunes of War just says Sydney,s oldest pub and

dates earlier but the words continualy licenced may

be the diff

Also Mr G has Bush Inn New Norfolk [near Hobart]

as Australias oldest continualy licenced pub 1810
