New Years Eve Day in Sydney

My husband and I are visting Sydney for News Year this year. We are arriving on the 29th and are planning on doing most of the Sydney Harbour attractions on on the 30th. We've got our NYE evening sorted, but we are at a bit of a loss of what to do on New Years Eve daytime. From what I understand things get a bit crazy in this part of town and we we're wondering if it would be a good idea to head out to Bondi or Manly for the day, but I'm concerned about getting back to the hotel (we are staying in The Rocks). Any suggestions please?

Do you mean the day of the 31st?

It's a normal working day in Sydney with all shops and offices open.

It starts to get crowded at the popular Harbourside vantage points like Mrs Macquaries chair early in the day as people stake out positions but around the city nothing much happens till later when the crowds start coming down to Circular Quay for the 9 o'clock fireworks.

Unless you plan on getting back to your hotel room after 7 you should have no trouble getting through.

If you go to Manly you will need to get back before then as the ferries stop running at about 6:30 until after midnight.

Just to clarify a few points.

Some streets do close earlier in the day , eg Macquarie st, Alfred St not offices are open, many smaller operators in the city are closed and many are on low staffing levels due to people taking annual leave and some will close at midday .

The area around the quay is fairly chaotic but it usually has an excellent atmosphere and it part of the NYE experience, there may be points during the day where you have to get your bags checked if you are passing through a no alcohol zone, eg the forecourt of the Opera House is a limited access zone and often fills early. This similar to some areas like Dawes Point

if you stick to public transport then you should have no issues getting back to the city. The whole thing is geared to get people there.

If you haven't already seen it this is a great link and stays up to date www.sydneynewyearseve.com/vantage-points/
