1. Re: Australia

Your tastes and interest seem to point heavily in favour of Melbourne first, then possibly Sydney.

A good starting point would be to read the FAQ's on the Melbourne forum, to see if places such as Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and the city of Melbourne maybe of interest to you.

Likewise the same with Sydney and Hunter Valley.

August is still very cold in Victoria, but if you don't mind the cold you could look at Melbourne as suggested and include the Yarra valley wineries.

If you decide on Sydney then a couple of days in the Hunter Valley, one of Australia's premier wine growing regions, would be interesting and enjoyable. Sydney itself has many art galleries for you to visit and would any visit to Australia be complete without a visit to Sydney Harbour?

Two weeks is generally regarded as a good time

To do the Bridge- Reef - Rock trio.

A few days in Sydney and surrounds then a flight to Cairns to visit the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree rainforest followed by a few days at Uluru. August is a good time to do this.

For art consider Melbourne (google NGV), Hobart (google MONA - this is a special new gallery), Sydney (MCA, Art Gallery of NSW) and Canberra (National Gallery, Natioanl Portrait Gallery, National Library).
