Harbour Islands

Hi,

If you could only visit one of the Harbour Islands which one would you choose?

Thanks

Cockatoo Island is full of Sydney's Maritime History if that takes your fancy. For something completely different you can spend a night on the island 'glamping'.http://www.cockatooisland.gov.au/stay/glamping

Cockatoo Island for history/buildings/size and it currently has the Sydney Art Biennale there as well (which means more visitors than usual). There is no public transport access to Shark or Clark islands.

There is actually a ferry to Shark Island four times daily. It is run by the private Captain Cook Cruises (Maltida), but its fares are governed by IPART - the independent transport pricing regulator - thus it is considered public transport (as opposed to a cruise/charter). The ferry timetables are included in the trip planner at www.transportnsw.info also.

Timetable here:

I have used this before and it is enjoyable though nothing spectacular. It is nice destination for a picnic and photography, but doesn't offer much besides that. It does have toilets.

You can also go to Fort Denison (Pinchgut Island) by a Matilda Ferry - timetable available from Matilda is here: captaincook.com.au/sydney-harbour-cruises/…

Goat Island is accessible by a tour only - see www.sydneytallships.com.au/convicts-tour.html

Clark Island indeed has no public transport.

I second the recommendation for Cockatoo Island as the best island to visit.

Another plug for Cockatoo - it's fantastic and remarkably diverse in its sights.

When returning by ferry to Circular Quay, think about getting off at Balmain and going for a walk up Darling Street - lots of cafes, shops and some lovely houses to see in the leafy back streets around there. Afterwards, you can catch the ferry back to the city or take the 442 or 441 bus into the city centre.
