Travelling ALONE! Scared but Excited need advise guys

Hello Everyone i was just seeking a little advise if possible?

I'm coming over to Sydney to travel alone in September, I haven't picked a date yet due to work but I no it will defiantly be September.

I want to stay in Sydney for a good few months then eventually travel up to cairns to meet up with a few friends.

I'm just getting a little scared on what to do, shall I stay in hostels and meet up with new people whilst in Sydney that way or shall i try and get a house share of gumtree?

If i do stay in hostels which ones do people advise to stay in? I'm 24, I like to party but i also like to sightsee and explore so which hostels will be best for me?

Also what about work, is it easy to find?

I'm sorry for getting on , just getting a little more nervous as each day passes,

Also if anyone could recommend any good websites to go on that will help me meet new travellers, or maybe get a bit more information then that would be great

Thanks guys!

Hello Matty and welcome to TA

first things first .. do you have your WHV sorted?

what do you want to do in Sydney "for a good few months" .. Sydney is an expensive city for visitors so you should make sure you have sufficient funds. You might be able to find a room to rent via gumtree but hostels will be a better option to meet people.

Head over to www.travellerspoint.com - that's where you'll meet all the backpacker crowd and probably get more info than you will here

Re work: what skills/qualifications/experience do you have - we have very high youth unemployment here ..check www.seek.com to see if you can line up something before you come.

also, there have been tonnes of previous posts by people in the same situation - use the search box (directly above your post & at the top of the list of threads on the Aussie forum front page and other forum pages) to locate them - they are full of great info.

Harness that excitement and do a bit more research

cheers

Hi Matty,

Sounds exciting. Sydney is awesome. Im sure you will have a wonderful time here and will meet some great people. Sydney is not cheap though, so save your pennys.

In terms of accommodation, hostels are ok - but i wouldnt consider them the safest or cleanest (hygienic) option. Look at renting a studio in Ultimo perhaps (right near central station in the city) or Kingsford, see http://www.realestate.com.au/rent/property-unit+apartment-with-studio-between-0-250-in-ultimo%2c+kingsford/list-1

Ultimo and Kingsford areas are right near Sydneys universities and so there are many people around day and night, transport is very conveinient in these areas and i would consider them safe. You can walk to the city, Darling Harbour, Cockle Bay, King Strret Wharf, Circular Quay, the casino, fishmarkets and lots of eateries and cafes from Ultimo. Kingsford is about a 10 minute commute on public transport.

Have fun.

You wouldn't be running a little ad for that studio, would you, Rexxxxyyy?

Perhaps have a look at the TA Terms & Conditions .

Bokhara, no, i do not own an apartment in Ultimo or Kingsford or surrounding areas. If you see the link it is a general link anyway. Just trying to provide another alternative for Mattybowman1. It was just a suggestion.

Another option is to stay in Manly. There are heaps of young tourists like yourself who stay & work in Sydney whilst enjoying the beach lifestyle. Manly offers heaps of backpacker's hostels too & its fabulous for your age group.

Hey mate, I'm 23 and live in Sydney.

Definitely stay in a hostel for the first couple of weeks. Go with Bounce or Wake Up! - both are located right next to Central Station. If you want something a bit quieter, the 3 YHAs are very clean/well organised. You might want to move around a bit - maybe a week in Bondi and a week in Manly as well?

Once you know Sydney well enough, start to look for a house on gumtree. But you have to realise, a room in a decent house will be $200 + bills per week at an absolute minimum.

It can be hard to get a job. Some hostels offer work. Alternatively, the best way to get work is to go door to door with a resume. I would suggest you learn how to make perfect espresso and cocktails before you come, in addition to basic hospitality skills (carrying 3 plates, trays etc). You might consider getting a job in Leeds first at a chain that we have down here too, e.g. at an international hotel - a reference within the same company will make everything 1000x easier. You could also try fruit picking in the country.

When you do score a job, you will be earning ~$20/hr at a proper place or $15 at a dodgy cash in hand place.

Make sure you have your WH visa sorted well before you leave. Nothing spoils a tour of a lifetime like being deported or being slapped with a 5 year ban for visa breaches.
