3 or 4 day road trip.

We are 2 adults planning a road trip from Sydney to Blue Mountain the down to perhaps Southern Highlands. Then back up to Sydney by the coast (Grand Pacific Drive)

We plan on spending the 1st night at Blue Mountain.

We don't plan on doing any hiking or outdoor activities that will take up a lot of time. Mainly sight seeing and exploring the town/ countryside.

Would appreciate your advice:

1. Should we do a 3 or 4 day trip?

2. In which town/ city should we spend the 2nd night? (and 3rd night if relevant)

3. How far south should we go? Mittagong? Jervis Bay?

Thanks!

When are you planning your trip?

Apart from general sightseeing, what are your interests? For example, if you're interested in food & wine, there may be some markets/ festivals on that we could suggest - or art or garden exhibitions.

We will be travelling during the 2nd wk of July. We are really wondering where to spend our 2nd (and maybe 3rd) night. Initially thought of just driving and getting a room in whichever town we end up in. We were told, however, that it would be school holidays and it would be advisable to book our hotel/ motel in advance.

Wine, markets & art sounds great. Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks :)

Hi Tydus_cleo. First of all it is not Blue Mountain, it is the Blue Mountains, and if you are not seeking an outdoorsy/hiking type destination then I question whether the Blue Mountains is the right destination for you. It is probably the number one day trip out of Sydney but you have more than one day and apparently no interest in its main claim to fame. So although it is a beautiful region you certainly have other options. Therefore, given your stated interest in wine and markets and art, I suggest two alternatives to think about.

◽ north of Sydney, the Hunter Valley wine region and Central Coast

◽ south of Sydney, the Southern Highlands, Canberra and the South Coast

IMO the drawback is July is the middle of winter, that means daylight hours are short. You want to plan a route which will ensure you are off the roads before dark. Please see the FAQs about Driving in Australia.

Are your plans to fly to Sydney from Malaysia, pick up a car and head straight to the Blue Mountains for night 1?

I took it to mean the first night of the road trip, but considering some of the itineraries we have seen recently it is wise to double check. Tydus_cleo, please let us know when you are arriving and where in your holiday the road trip fits in?
