Train or Train/Ferry from Katoomba

Hi! We will be staying a few days in Katoomba in March, and coming into Sydney on a Saturday morning, dropping off our carryon bags at Meriton Kent St and then spending the day in Sydney (Opera House/Manly Ferry etc). Should we just take the train straight into Central Station or change (at Olympic Park?) to the Parramatta ferry and get off at Darling Harbour for the views/experience? We only have the one day in Sydney (fly out on Sunday) so want to make the best use of our time. If we do change to the ferry, how do we get there from the train and how much longer is the journey? If it makes a difference, we will likely use the Opal card to get the $15 rate for the day. Thank you!

Adding the ferry will take up a considerable amount of your very short time. I'd stay on the train straight to the city, and spend your time around the city and on the Manly Ferry. The Parramatta ferry is nice, but you spend a considerable amount of the time at low speeds in the narrow parts of the river closer to Parramatta.

If you want to change to the ferry, forget Olympic Park. You'll be looking at changing trains twice and getting a bus to the ferry wharf.

Change at Parramatta, and walk along Church St to the river, then along the river to the Wharf. It will take half an hour or so. Or you can get a bus - or shortcut the walk, but Church St is nicer.

Catch the train direct to the city and agree a Manly ferry for views (if short on time just catch a ferry to Cremorne Point for views back to the city).

Getting from Parramatta Station to the ferry requires a bus and at low tide the ferry doesn't even go as far as Parramatta. The entire journey from arriving at Parramatta station to the city will take up nearly half your day.

I agree 100% with the others - take the train straight to the city, drop off your bags and head to Circular Quay.

Spend the daylight hours enjoying the area around Circular Quay.

Take a historical walk around the Rocks.

Walk across the the Harbour Bridge and get a ferry back from Milson'sPoint,

Wander around to The Opera House and have a late lunch at the Opera Kitchen then stroll through The Botanical Gardens to Mrs Macquarie's Chair.

In the evening take a ferry ride to Manly and have some dinner then get the ferry back. The Harbour looks like fairyland at night and the views from the ferry coming back to the city are unforgettable.

Enjoy your (brief) experience of Sydney.

Definitely agree with the others. Another no vote for the ferry from Parramatta.

Echoing all the "forget Parramatta" posts. I'd just suggest you take a ferry or train TO Milsons Point or Kirribilli & wak back to the city. That way, the Opera House & city views will will be in front of you & to the east.
