Darwin to Alice Springs

My friend and i are backpacking from Darwin to Alice Springs and are looking for some good cheap accommodations. We're open to camping but we don't have a tent or sleeping bags so we would want to rent those. Any suggestions???

How do you plan to get from Darwin to Alice Springs ?? You can hire camping gear from Darwin but they would then need to be returned. How do you plan to do this ?

Also what time of year are you planning on travelling and for how long?

Be aware that accommodation in the NT is rarely considered to be cheap, although everyone's cheap is different. What kind of price are you expecting to pay?

The cheapest way would be by bus as hitch hiking is illegal now. The bus only stops at a few places though, May be possible if you are staying at a back packers to see if someone is driving that way and looking for passengers to share the cost.

For cheap camping gear you might strike it lucky if you find at one of the hostels some one who is now leaving and are selling up their gear.
