Darwin Getaway

Hello All,

I will be in Darwin over the holidays with my wife and her very large family. My wife and I plan to get away for a day or two, staying preferably somewhere within a 3-4 hour driving radius. A stand-alone cabin of some sort with a barbeque would be ideal, but I'm open to anything (though we do not plan to go camping).

Anyone know of some good options? Thanks!

You do not say which holidays but I guess Christmas. If so it will be the Wet season and you will probably experience some heavy rain on some days which may restrict your travelling. If not it will be hot and humid.

Out of Darwin there is the resort at Lake Bennett where you can hire cabins but there is not much else there, or nearby at Batchelor there are cabins, such as http://www.rumjunglebungalows.com.au/ and http://www.butterflyfarm.net/ but it is closed over the Christmas period. and also http://www.banyan-tree.com.au/.

Wangi Falls in Litchfield NP are already closed for swimming due to the high water levels but the area is open.

Kakadu NP is 2.5 hours away and there are cabins at Lakeview Park and Aurora Kakadu. A few places are closed due to the wet season but still plenty to do for 2 days. Litchfield has a range of accommodation available and is 1.5 hours from Darwin. Plenty to see and do even with Wangi closed. Katherine is 3 hours away and there would be the option of taking a cruise through Nitmluk Gorge and visiting the Katherine Hot Springs, if they are still open. That's about it really, aside from Lake Bennett or Bamarru Plains, which sounds fantastic but you'd need to re- mortgage your house to visit !

Yep yep Lake Bennett, but I wonder if Dundee Beach or Mandorah have some holiday houses to rent, it would be nice over that way.

Good thinking kenhoath- there's a nice B & B at Mandorah called Lure Inn. Crab Claw Island Resort is also nice and is open year round, which i didn't realise before now. Looks like they've done some upgrades as the rooms didn't used to have air con and now they do, which is essential for the wet season ! We loved our stay there and enjoyed hiring a boat to go for a fish. It's only around 1.5 hours from Darwin (from memory) but you really feel like you're miles away.
