Christmas Day Stop Over in Darwin - ideas?

We are a family of 4 (teenage children) and have a Christmas Day stop over in Darwin. We arrive at 4.45am from Melbourne and have a flight out to Singapore at 6.30pm. I've inquired with a couple of hotels nearest to the airport for the single day accommodation, but the expense at this time of year being Christmas would be stretching our budget. Can anyone give me some suggestions on easy accessible places to fill in time (happy to hire a car if needed) and somewhere casual to go for Christmas Lunch. Really appreciate any help.

Have you looked at all the hotels - even in town? You could get a single room and all jam in there? Goodle dARWIN Waterfront has Vibe and Adina as well as restaurants. Have you contacted any other hotels? It would be kind of pointless staying at the airport if you want to get around and have a look,,,,,

Look for hotels on Esplanade.

I would not suggest going to Litchfield due to short time frame and could be rainy and storms.

You might find it hard to find some where to Christmas Day lunch as many places are closed or they have a big lunch on, say a couple of hours long, and are not cheap but you have to book early. You could try places such as the Casuarina Club though you might have to join as a member, the Sunset Cafe at the Casino often has something on or try the other cafes/ restaurants to see what they offer,

I would try to get a hotel if you can. I have made this mistake before, thinking I would get some sleep on the plane, and paid for it dearly. If you are just looking for somewhere to crash and not necessarily in Darwin, I would have a look at BP Palms caravan park or Quest Palmerston. The rooms/cabins may well be cheaper and are self contained so you can have a meal there.

If you choose to stick it out, you will need a car. It is about $40 each way to Darwin in a cab. Sunset Restuarant at the casino is a buffet, but you will be looking at around $35 a head for lunch (maybe more being Xmas). Most of the Darwin resturants will be closed - your best bet will be a restuarant in a hotel.

Good luck!
