Older Couple 3 Days In Darwin

We have friends going in July to Darwin, they are looking for recommendations for things to do during that time that will give them an overview of the area. Approx 10 years ago I went there and was going to suggest that they go to the following:

1/ Museum-one with the Cyclone Tracey exhibition

2/ Crocodile Park

3/ War Museum

4/ Mindi Beach Markets

5/ Papasley Peal History- used to be on left side going onto wharf, cannot find it now?

6/Tunnels under City

7/ Eating on the Wharf at night cannot remember the name nor can I find any mention of it.

That is a few of my thoughts, can a local clear up some of the areas I cannot find or they may have closed and perhaps recommend other activities.

Our friendS are aged in there late 70's and will probably hire a car.

Hi Soapy49

There are some good suggestions there - just a couple of updates

1/ Darwin museum - still good and has a nice cafe attached as well.

2/ Not sure which one you mean. The Crocodile Park that used to be in Noonamah no longer does tours. Crocodylus Park on McMillans Rd is a crocodile farm that still operates tours (a bit overpriced for what you get if you ask me but my sister enjoyed it). There is also a new place right in the heart of town - Crocosaurus Cove, not a croc farm, more an aquarium type set up but well done.

3/ The old East Point Military Museum is still out at East Point, but now has a flash new Defence of Darwin Exhibition right next door (haven't been yet but it is meant to be good). I think your entry fee covers both.

4/ Still popular and no doubt the same as you remember.

5/ This closed down a couple of years back.

6/ WWII Oil Storage Tunnels - still there and operating tours.

7/ You mean Stokes Hill Wharf, one of my favourite spots for a feed. Although you wouldn't recognise the area around it anymore, it has been done up with apartments, a swimming lagoon, wave pool, restaurants etc.

A couple of other things you could recommend

- Aquascence fish feed in at Doctor's Gully (better than it sounds)

- drive to Litchfield National Park for a day

- Territory Wildlife Park (a little under an hour out of town - they could combine it with a swim at Berry Springs and a jumping crocodile cruise on the Adelaide River).

- a sunset harbour cruise.

- old Fannie Bay Gaol

A great reply from ShazDwn, has most of it covered.

Do not miss the Mindil Markets on Thursday night,

or the quieter Sunday, which will include a spectacular sunset.

Stokes Hill Wharf is definitely a great dining experience.

Kakadu National park is worth a visit.. Not too far from Darwin.. But probably best doing it on the way in or out, instead of travelling there and then back to Darwin.

Mindle beach markets are also worth a visit, if you happen to be there when they are on.. Nice food and good clothes!

Stokes hill wharf is also worth a visit, Here they have crocodile, bison, camel and Kangeroo on the menu at some of the food stalls..

The casino is also worth a visit. I think there is a museum next door which has pics from Hurrican Tracey and the largest croc ever caught is also there.
