Queensland with kids

Hi, looking at taking the kids to Gold Coast for a week next year, then heading off somewhere for another week to relax on the beach (diving, snorkling etc). Any recommendations of other places we could go with kids? Preferably would like somewhere further north than GC with kids club. Does anyone know of any free kids clubs? Would we be better to do an island or north queensland? Have been to Sunshine Coast already, so quite keen to try somewhere else. Many thanks!

You need to be careful when you do this trip. It's not a good idea to holiday north of Airlie Beach between November and March because of the potential wet season and the stingers. We find that September is a good month for GC and FNQ weatherwise. It's warm enough at GC and a pleasant 26 degrees and dry up north. However, as you would be aware, there's no guarantees with the weather.

You could have a look at Mission Beach, 90 mins south of Cairns. It's a beautiful beach, you can do a day trip to Dunk Island, go walking in the tropical rain forest where there is a good chance you will find (or be found by) a cassowary. There is an abundance of good holiday rental accommodation, including houses rignt on the beach. A good option for motel type accommodation is Eco Village at the north end of the beach. They have a pool, restaurant and family type units. I don't know of any Kid's Clubs there except on Dunk island, but there is plenty to keep children happy.

The way to do this would be to fly to Cairns and pick up a car for the week. You will need it to get to Licuala and other forest walks. A day trip to Townsville (3 hours drive each way) for a visit to the ReefHQ Aquarium is worth doing.

yes wigwam is right about timing - it can have a big impact on your plans.

If you have already been to the Sunshine Coast ( Twin Waters - one of the best kids clubs/activities in the country), then your best options for resorts with kids clubs are probably the following ;-

Kingfisher Bay on Fraser Island

Heron Island ( junior ranger club available during school holidays)

Lady Elliot Island ( jnr club 3 - 12 yrs again during holidays)

or fly north to the Whitsudnays and either

Daydream , Hayman or Hamilton Island

Hi - thanks so much for the advise! At this stage we are thinking about the july nz school holidays, so hopefully stingers wont be a prob. I will check out all those suggestions, thanks. Will also have a look at Twin Waters, as we did enjoy the Sunshine Coast.

Cheers!
