We'd be travelling to Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Fraser island and then to Cairns & FNQ this August. Planned to go up to Cape Trib at present but may extend to Bloomfield Track.
Hertz quoting me $ 120 for renting a GPS unit ( 2 separate rentals : 7 & 5 days).
Tomtom map for Australia only would cost me £ 55 GBP.
I sometimes use Google Voice navigation through my phone in UK ( admittedly not as good as Tomtom but acceptable).
I believe Google has released same voice navigation for Australia. I'll buy a prepaid sim card from Telstra for local calls and looks like there is fair amount of data allowance for reasonable price.
Currently they have a promotion of 1 GB bonus data for $ 30 recharge for new customers.
Although that is the cheapest option I'm worried that Google navigation/Telstra 3 G may not be very reliable in far north.
Has anyone had any experience of using Google navigation up there ?
Would Tomtom with an Oz map be a safer option ?
Just wonder whether I really need a sat nav for far north ( can't see too many one way streets !!) but dear wife refuses to travel abroad without one nowadays.
I'd carry a paper map as well for back up !!
