Use Google navigation or buy Tomtom map ?

Hi,

We'd be travelling to Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Fraser island and then to Cairns & FNQ this August. Planned to go up to Cape Trib at present but may extend to Bloomfield Track.

Hertz quoting me $ 120 for renting a GPS unit ( 2 separate rentals : 7 & 5 days).

Tomtom map for Australia only would cost me £ 55 GBP.

I sometimes use Google Voice navigation through my phone in UK ( admittedly not as good as Tomtom but acceptable).

I believe Google has released same voice navigation for Australia. I'll buy a prepaid sim card from Telstra for local calls and looks like there is fair amount of data allowance for reasonable price.

Currently they have a promotion of 1 GB bonus data for $ 30 recharge for new customers.

Although that is the cheapest option I'm worried that Google navigation/Telstra 3 G may not be very reliable in far north.

Has anyone had any experience of using Google navigation up there ?

Would Tomtom with an Oz map be a safer option ?

Just wonder whether I really need a sat nav for far north ( can't see too many one way streets !!) but dear wife refuses to travel abroad without one nowadays.

I'd carry a paper map as well for back up !!

Cheers

Dont rely on phone reception in fnq. Use satellite gps navigation .

A paper map will be fine up north. There aren't that many roads.

I'd recommend buying the Oz map for your Tomtom rather than relying on a phone-based navigation system in Australia - especially in FNQ. And, like you, I'd always carry a paper map as a back-up

Thanks guys. Looks like it's not a good idea to depend on phone based sat navs. So going for Tomtom + a paper map.

Check Telstras mobile and broadband coverage:

telstra.com.au/mobile/…state.html

Unless you're going off the beaten track, you'll be fine with just a paper map (i relied on one for years until my gf bought a gps - now I cant go back !) - I'd just use google maps for backup.

Anywhere past the Sunshine coast and its pretty damn hard to get lost !

In the cities it might be slightly more complicated, but Google will still get you there, no problem.

Price v convenience - if you want to stump up for tomtom go for it.

enjoy !
