Brisbane to Fraser Island

Hi, just reading a few notes around this same discussion topic but could do with some advice...

We are flying from Sydney to Brisbane on the 4th Jan and need to fly back on the 8th.

We want to fit Fraser Island in and are looking to drive where possible. We were planning on driving from Sydney to Brisbane but time and hotel availability in Sydney has restricted this. Disappointed by having to fly, can anyone recommend how we can best spend our time from the 4th Jan - late afternoon of the 8th Jan?? (Fly back to UK Midday on 9th)

Thanks

Also, just another point....

If we were to fly from Sydney to Hervey Bay Airport, what are the restrictions i.e. time's to get to the island ?

Its likely we would arrive around 10am so would need to fit a schedule in around our arrival time and getting to the island.....

Thanks

It's big drive from Brisbane to Hervey Bay - approx. 3.5 - 4 hours each way. If you decide to drive you'll essentially lose a whole day out of the four you have, which would be a shame.

Unless you hire a 4WD you won't be able to take a car over to Fraser anyway. The whole island is 4WD territory.

I'd definitely fly from Sydney or Brisbane to Hervey Bay. From Brisbane it only takes about 45 minutes. That'll mean a lot more time on the island.

I'm not sure where you're staying on Fraser but here is the link for ferry transfers on the Kingfisher Bay Resort website:

Hope this helps.

Do not even consider hiring a 4WD if you do not have soft sand driving experience. The island will be very busy at that time of year so book your accomodation now.. You haven't much time so yes fly!

We did a so called 1 hour flight a couple of years ago and ended with a 4+ hours traveltime with security, waiting time, delays etc. etc. It's very easy to pick up a rental car from Brisbane a/p and the drive to Hervey Bay will take 3.5-4 hours as mentioned before so you can arrive Hervey Bay jan 4.

Take a full day trip to Fraser Island. We started 8.30 am and were back by 8 pm. You also can stay overnight on the Island. On your way back to Brisbane you might visit Australia Zoo near Beerwah, one of the best. It's easy to find the road from and to the airport on this trip.

And I second Surfoz on the selfdrive with a 4x4. Don't!! We saw tragedies with broken axles etc. during our visit and the towtrucks did overtime.

Thank you for your feedback we find it very useful. We have decided to fly to Fraser Coast from Sydney based on your advice and are now looking for appropriate accomodation in Fraser Island. We will need 3 nights as we would like to spend 1 night in Brisbane. Can you recommend anywhere to stay ? Also, the best option to get to the island?

Many thanks

Fraser is just a big sand dune. Do you really need to stay there for 3 days? One day is sufficient. You seem short on time so fit something else in. Noosa? I would recommend an escorted day tour. Don't think about your own 4wd. there aren't any roads on Fraser, just sand tracks and most of them single track. I think the tour company coaches have their routes planned so they only meet each other at suitable passing places. I wouldn't want to argue with a coach!

Having said that we fully enjoyed our day on Fraser.

Hi - have just spoken to Trailfinders and they can offer the Kingfisher Bay resort including transfers for 3 nights, 2 people - £427 in total (thats if its available).

Is there anywhere else/ better on the island for less than £213 each for 3 nights (including transfers) ? Are the transfers cheaper when you get to hervey bay ?

Whats the journey time from Fraser Airport to Hervey Bay ?

If we decided on this accomodation, does this then mean we're missing out on the excursions ?

We really want to make the most of our time and we have decided we will spend 3 nights in Fraser Island and then fly back to Sydney to fly back to the UK.

Would be grateful of some responses from travellers who have stayed in Fraser

Thanks

I think you might want to book onto a tour - I did an overnight, which included accommodation. They take you to all the lovely places and you don't have to worry about dealing with driving on the sand.

Kingfisher Bay is the nicest and most accessible resort on the island. There are other places to stay (no where near as nice) but they're on the Eastern side and you'd need a 4WD to get there. And as others have said before, if you don't have soft sand driving experience then I wouldn't recommend hiring a 4WD and attempting it. Those inland tracks can be challenging driving even for those of us that are used to it.

Kingfisher Bay Resort runs tours of the island so you'll be able to get to see the main sites on their tours.

It's been awhile since I've done it but I'd say the transfer from Hervey Bay airport to the ferry terminal would be 10-15 minutes at most.

Thanks for your replies, it certainly helps. Just trying to see if we can get 3 nights at the Kingfisher Bay resort.

What would be the best option for a day trip from hervey bay to the Whitsundays? I.e transport and is it even possible???

Thanks
