Coles in the CBD should have freshly grown strawberries, its strawberry season in Queensland, and IMO some of the best grown anywhere. Although I did see the amount of rain this year has had an effect on some strawberry growers with losses, but you should be OK.

Coles supermarkets might have fresh cherries, but they will be imports, normally from the US.

The Farmer's Market on Wednesday mornings in Redacliffe Place, next to the Treasury Casino, has Grade 1 sweet succulent strawberries. Try the stall nearest to George Street - you can't miss it - boxes and punnets of red, luscious, freshly picked strawberries.

Cherries are out of season. The ones in the supermarkets now are imported from the USA and should be readily available in Malaysia as well.

Beautiful strawberries here at the moment, i think you need to eat them here unless you are sure you can take them back with you.

and the american cherries are great too.

$8kg down our way.

this is about the same price as the americans are paying! in the mid west anyway.

how do that do that? assume they have to be airfreighted and go thru all sorts of quarantine hoops.

and we have had strawberries here since june! some from qld and some from victoria. surely the latter are hot house produced.

Yes, I've been wondering about the cost of the cherries too - how do they get them onto the shelves at a lower prices than the local product? High AUD? Low prices to farmers?

I don't buy imported fruit - but the cherries are tempting!

I don't think there is a problem taking fruit into Malaysia - I used to do it all the time when we lived there - always declared, never a problem.

Just a hint gossip - strawbs don't travel well. Keep them refrigerated till just before you leave and wrap in layers of newspaper or, better still, pack in a polystyrene box to keep them cool or they will be mushy by the time to arrive in KL.

If you are not in the city for the Wednesday Farmers Markets in the CBD, they also hold them every second weekend at the New Farm Park - Powerhouse Museum - plus there are some more farmers at the Saturday markets.

They are called the Jan Powers Markets, if you google them you see the website with the calendar when they are on. You can even catch the City Cat to New Farm park - which is a nice ride on a Saturday morning.
