Weekend rail trips?

Hi,

We are in Brisbane for a few months for work and are always looking for something to do for the weekend, we've rented a car a few times and been to Noosa, Coolum, Surfers, Coolangatta etc and are now interested in doing some trips on the train?

Is there anywhere we can get to by rail close enough for a weekend trip (leave Fri night or early Sat and back late Sun)? So far most places I've looked at on the QR website are too far away or the train only runs one of the weekend days.

We've seen a lot of beaches so seeing some of outback Australia would be fun if that exists in Queensland?

Any suggestions would be great!

As you say the trains don't run all that often on the longer routes - usually several times a week.

I would hire a car again and drive west. Go to Toowoomba and the on to the granite belt (stanthorpe and balandeen). Or head further west out to Roma on the edge of the outback.

Also consider hinterland areas of the coast like the lamington plateau and national park.

Dont think the trains any good really. need a car.

If you havent been - day trips or overnights that are not the beach- montville and maleny, mt tamborine, mt glorious, mt cootha and the botanic gardens, glass house mts area.

Longer than a day- As georgia suggests - stanthorpe (girraween/bald rock) toowoomba, kingaroy.

Maybe take advantage of a cheap flight out to hamilton island or out west, these arent usually cheap though :( to longreach etc.
