Drive Brisbane to Sydney

My husband and I plan to drive from Brisbane to Sydney mid September. We would like to make two overnight stops and we are finding it difficult to choose. We would like a town with luxury boutique style accommodation and good restaurant options. Thank you for any assistance.

Just 20 mins south of Coffs Harbour is the town of Bellingen at the base of the Dorrigo Plateau. Beautiful little town with upmarket B&Bs and access to many restaurants.

It's a complete change from the beach themed towns up and down the coast.

If you were to choose Bellingen, try No.2 Oak St. Wonderful restaurant!

I 'accidentally' took the Summerland Way on my last drive Brisbane - Sydney, from Beaudesert to Coffs Harbour and it was amazing!! Avoiding all the road works on that part of the coast road, and the truck heavier inland road, it goes down the middle.

These days the Pacific Highway is in a bit from the coast anyway and boring highway driving most of the time, the Summerland is pretty, far less busy.and gets you to Coffs Harbour in about 4-5 hours from Beaudesert. This website has all the info http://www.summerlandway.com.au/main.htm

It was the best 'wrong turn' I've taken in a long time!! The site also has historic and scenic information.

I went straight through Coffs and stopped in Tuncurry (Forster-Tuncurry) on the beach, and from there went off the 'beaten track' again, onto the Lakes Way, driving through the gorgeous beach & lake district to Newcastle, and then nipped across the highway over to the Hunter Valley, - lots of luxury there! and drove refreshed into Sydney from the West.

A bit different, but a lovely way to spend two days and see more of this gorgeous country.

We are part way through the same journey in the reverse direction. From Sydney we spent a night in the Hunter Valley to explore the wineries and impressive HV Gardens - www.hvg.com.au. Then 3 nights in Bellingen at Promised Land Cottages - just beautiful self contained accommodation with magic views from each cottage of the hinterland - www.promisedlandcottages.com.au. Bellingen has fantastic regional markets so check the dates, worth trying to be there then; also produce markets. Dorrigo National park is 30 minutes inland and has beautiful walks. Tomorrow night staying at Arcadia house in Byron Bay, booked through Wotif; it seems to be boutique guest house, but has good reviews on Trip Advidor. The Pacific Highway is fairly boring itself, just a thoroughfare and you don't see much of the coast from it so worth diverting along the way. Enjoy your trip

We travel that route a lot - have a look at Sawtell just about 15 min form Coffs Harbour - there are really nice restaurants in the Main Street - it is now one off our favourite stops :) .... Also Port Stephens is a nice stop as well ...
